Re: Messy Corner Brickwork?? 34Jul 04, 2007 8:59 am Michelle,
Ok, this is my first posting of a pic so it might not work. I went out into my garden in our rental house last night - it was cold and wet so hope you appreciate this. I took a photo of the first corner I came across. Did I mention that it was cold?? Anyway, the rental we are in was built by the owner using contractors and was clearly done on the cheap. The grouting is clearly messy but the lack of pronounced zig zagging is also clear. Other options are to not interlock the bricks at all but to simply put an expansion joint in, arrange the design to reduce such corners, use a lighter colour mortar, put a window or door flush with the join area and non interlocking bricks with mesh corners laid horizontal with the bricks in the mortar. (Hard to explain) As for what I would do about it, I can't honestly say unless I am in that position but some of the things I would consider are: 1. Ask for a deduction in price from the builder. 2. Get the builder to tear it down and rebuild. Deadlines are one thing but a badly built house is not going to just go away with time. Now if you like the ziz zag effect, you should have simple said so from the start, Personally I don't and I get the feeling that aaurora wasn't too keen either. You seem to have talked her around, but that is not a happy client, that is a placated client. So NO Michelle, I won't take second rate - If I don't like it, I will do something about it. That workmanship looks more like the efforts of a brand new apprentice and should have been picked up by the bricky in charge. Anyway here is my attempt at a pic: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Messy Corner Brickwork?? 36Jul 04, 2007 9:27 am After all these discussions, is it possible for someone to kindly post a picture of what should a "perfect" corner brick work looks like?
Cheers Allan http://building-our-first-house.blogspot.com/ Re: Messy Corner Brickwork?? 37Jul 04, 2007 9:49 am 3xb, thank you so much for all your input so far Your picture is exactly what I think corners should look like, perhaps a bit neater with the mortar, but the fact that it is in a straight line makes it look SO MUCH nicer.
I have emailled the builder with the pictures attached and I will wait to see what they have to say about it. I am perfectly happy with the rest of the brickwork, and I do not know how far back this would set us if we wanted that section torn down. I hate to be picky, but some people think it is fine, and some are not happy. I don't know what to think of it!! Our Adenbrook home was completed in September. NO ONE is asking aaurora or you to take second rate work, 3xb. I HAVE NOT talked arroura into liking her SO CALLED messy brickwork….she simply see’s the only steps she can take from this time forward……rip it down! Obviously not where she is looking to go! I have NEVER said at any point on this forum that people should accept second rate work from ANYONE! I’m quite the opposite, I’m the first one to jump in and make my ANGREY thoughts known to all! The mortar work of your rental is very bad…..I would not accept work like that. AGAIN I say……aurora brickwork does not look bad…….I stand by my thoughts…..and I don’t recall twisting aaurora’s arm to make her think otherwise. Quite truthfully I’m over the messy brickwork, I have said what I think about it, and who am I any way, it’s just an opinion from me. In the end it is up to aaurora and her hubby. Congrats on posting a photo! I don’t recall twisting aaurora’s arm to make her think otherwise. This: "So your resolve here is to knock down the whole wall just to get to the bottom bricks!!! This is going to put you behind substantially, and the mortar is dry by now and well set!" This: "I don’t see that is warrants knocking down the whole wall and walls attached to that area, just because a COUPLE of bricks don’t look right?" This: "at that stage something could have been done about it. " and This: "I think you will be making a hue mistake trying to rectify a SMALL problem." Make me think otherwise. Perhaps it is a matter of interpretation. Michelle The mortar work of your rental is very bad…..I would not accept work like that. Neither would I if it was being built for me but I am just renting thank goodness. Michelle Quite truthfully I’m over the messy brickwork, I have said what I think about it, and who am I any way, it’s just an opinion from me. I am just reluctantly responding to: This: "3xb…..what do you suggest she does about it?" This: "I was actually waiting for 3xb to inform me how it could be fixed, though I knew it didn’t need to..." and from Cookie Monster: "Im still waiting for 3xb to tell us how he would build the wall in such a way as to get a straight line of mortar at that junction. Im ready to be amazed...." Why do I have to justify my opinions but you don't? Michelle Congrats on posting a photo! Thanks. I'm very proud of it. I'll always remember my first time. I am in the same situation, would you be able to give some insights in to this? I am in SA 8 17063 I wanted to get some thoughts on the quality of workmanship on the following brickwork? are there specific clauses in Australian Standards which relate… 0 4814 |
