Just want to mention that I saw an article in the newspaper the other day that talked about people in wealthy old suburbs paying huge amounts for bore holes and mini desalination plants so that they can water their gardens. The article then goes on to discuss the extra value that trees add to a house. In these areas, having a mature tree that is visible from the road adds around $100 000.
It seems to me that if trees are so valued, perhaps new estates should look at options for preserving the existing trees and design around them instead of just bulldozing them all. Similarly, new home owners might be wise to plant 1 or 2 trees that will grow to a reasonable size. This is an investment for the future. Obviously wise planting is essential, appropriate species and location is important.
