Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 27, 2007 11:21 am As my frame is up to the second storey stage, I have noticed several steel beams have been installed through out the frame on the ground floor.
Basically, there are over a dozen steel posts within the frame walls and steel beams have been placed on top of them. It looks like the frame is 90% wood, but steel is underpinning it through out with about 6 to 8 steel beams accross the house. I didn't know that was going to be the case, not being a building professional, I have only seen the house in its finished state. Most frames I've seen around town didn't have much steel at all, if any. (I often saw a steel beam over the garage, and that's about it). Wonder what's the reasoning there, and what the difference is between double storey houses with or without steel in their design? Re: Steel beams in the frame 2Jun 27, 2007 11:48 am A combination of wood and steel in a frame is pretty much the norm nowadays....
The steel is to support the upper storey if you have large walkways downstairs etc. Re: Steel beams in the frame 3Jun 27, 2007 12:14 pm As matt said.
