Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 11, 2009 1:05 pm Hi, I am new to this forum but we are looking into building with commodore homes and just wondering if anyone has any feedback on them. Did anyone have any troubles or is there anything we should keep an eye out for? Your feedback would be appreciated Thanks. Re: Commodore Homes 2Oct 11, 2009 3:06 pm Hi Jess, we are building with Commordore Homes and have so far had a positive experience. Their customer service is really good, phone calls and emails are usually returned the same day. Our build has gone pretty quickly, it has been 17 weeks since the slab went down and we should hopefully have handover in the next couple of weeks. We went for a walkthrough on Friday and only noticed minor issues such as some scratches on a window and a few dents in the plasterwork. However we didn't get an independent inspector, so I can only say from our limited experience that it all looks pretty good. Our SS has been great, we have a lot of confidence in him. We have his mobile number and can call him at any time. The only thing I really have to complain about is the positioning of our light switches. I don't think our pre-start lady went through the electricals thoroughly with us, because we didn't realise until half way through our build that some of the switches were in really silly places and they don't accept any changes to electrical after pre-start at all. Apart from that we have been really happy, but we are not quite finished yet, and I think I will reserve final judgment until after we have been living in it for a couple of months! Apart from mine, I have only seen one other Commodore Homes thread, here is the link below if you want to have a read of Sooty's experience: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=19462 Re: Commodore Homes 3Oct 11, 2009 5:05 pm Thanks Shell83 That gives me a little bit of confidence knowing you havent had any major hiccups. Wow your build went so quickly, 17 weeks. What about your approvals stage with the shire etc? How did you find the pre-start stage (apart from the light switches problem)...did you find that the builders standard range had nice choices or did you have to pay to upgrade a lot of things? And a question I havent asked Commodore homes yet, do you have to pay for the pre-start costs up front like other builders? Thanks Re: Commodore Homes 4Oct 11, 2009 6:52 pm No, we didn't have to pay for the pre-start upfront, we sent a copy of the pre-start variation to our broker and got it added to our loan. From memory we got council approval in about 4-5 weeks. We signed our contract in Feb, pre-start was March and our slab was down in June. It felt like it took forever at the time, but in reality it will be 10 months from when we initially signed up to being able to move in. The builders standard range wasn't too bad, we were able to pick something we liked for most items without having to upgrade. But it all depends on personal taste doesn't it, just because we thought the standard range was ok doesn't mean everyone will! They don't accept any owner supplied items, because we did consider getting our own kitchen appliances but were told we would have to arrange for installation of them ourselves if we didn't pick from their range. We did end up upgrading to 900mm wide oven and hotplate, and changed half of our kitchen cupboards to pot draws. Our salesguy was refreshingly honest, he told us if we'd be better off doing something ourselves (such as painting and flooring) and so did our pre-start lady. I liked the fact that they weren't trying to upsell to us at every opportunity and they weren't pushy at all. I hope this helps, I'm happy to try to answer any other questions Ask for references and speak to them. If they are defensive or try to avoid the request, walk. 1 74688 I would never build with Fowler homes. I built with them in 2021 and till date maintenance issues are pending.
