Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 06, 2009 2:56 pm Hi Folks A question regarding using a Private Builder vs Volume Builder. We are looking to build a 2 story home and as part of the project we intend to do as much as possible outside of the builders contact. This will include driveways, floors, non critical electrical, kitchen appliances etc. Is it worth trying to get a competitive quote (for a similar design) from a private builder or is there no way a private builder can compete if price is an key objective. Thanks Re: Private Builder vs Volume Builder 2Oct 06, 2009 5:04 pm Hi Sassy, My FIL is a building designer/builder and he has said that the cheapest he could build a 'standard' house would be at least $1200 - 1500 per sqm. We're getting ours done through a volume builder for $1000 per sqm. If you have contacts in the industry and can get your outside building contract items done really really cheaply then it might be possible but my FIL would say close to impossible. Hope that helps somewhat.
