Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 25, 2009 10:52 am Hi all, Do you think the internal garage door access should be just after you open the front door (so the initial entry-way) or after the initial entry-way (so in this case it would be after a small archway and across from the lounge). I'm not sure whether I would want the garage access door to be viewed from the lounge, however if we put it in the initial entry-way we couldn't have a small table and not sure if it would look too cluttered. I am stumped. Would appreciate any pictures of where your internal garage access door is to give me some inspiration (and help to make a decision!) Re: Internal garage door access - where to put it? 2Sep 25, 2009 10:56 am Hi there, Mine is further along the hallway, we changed it from the originalplan which had it in the Home Theatre????? Good to have in front hallway close to kitchen if possible, making unloading groceries easy. But not in view of living areas for sure or in those rooms the front hallway. Hope this helps you Harribeka Re: Internal garage door access - where to put it? 3Sep 25, 2009 10:57 am Could you put up your floor plan so we can get a better idea? After 4 years - we're in! Re: Internal garage door access - where to put it? 4Sep 25, 2009 1:38 pm It really does depend on your floor plan. I don't like garages opening directly into the entry at all, no matter where the door is positioned, but it doesn't seem to bother most people. Ours opens into a mud room off the laundry - and since my husband is incapable of closing a door, that's just as well, or I'd spend half my life looking at garage mess. It's not just the placement of furniture or how it looks from inside the house that matters though - you also need to consider the practical placement of the door from the garage side. Is it going to have room to open inwards into the garage? If not, is there room for an inward-opening door on the house side? I'd hate to get smacked in the face by someone coming through the door from the garage as I was walking through the entry or hallway.... Re: Internal garage door access - where to put it? 5Sep 25, 2009 5:51 pm I agree with Stone cutter - we really need to see your floorplan to comment constructively. Single fronted homes usually do enter via front hallway - bit more problematic with double fronted homes where garage is not backing onto hallway - our house has front hallway with lounge and main bedroom either side and garage entry is into corner of family room which is directly across from kitchen so handy access for groceries. I would not have it in a lounge room or home theatre where you do not want traffic flow, our TV is in the front lounge and that room only has the door into it, can be closed off from other noise. Our garage door opens into the garage so not taking any house space and because it is in the corner of the room and at the top end of the garage, you do not really have much vision of the garage contents even with the door left open - which we dont often do anyway. Have posted pic of that part of house so you can see what I mean. http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj187/nurselovescoffee/IMG_0001-4.jpg I have seen houses with garage entry via laundries, pantries, kitchens - none of which I would really like - near the kitchen is good but not directly into the working area. Re: Internal garage door access - where to put it? 6Sep 25, 2009 9:10 pm I would have it in the initial entry-way, and move your hall table to the other spot, if the thought of looking at your garage door from you living area is bugging now it is going to bug you more when you are looking at whilst sitting in the living area. Just make sure the doors don't bang into each other. Nothing could be as bad as our rental they put in a doorway to the garage opening into the middle of the entranceway with no door , this still has me confused on why anyone would build a house and do this (the house its only 5yrs old).
