Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 22, 2009 7:28 pm Hi all
Started getting a couple of quotes to have the house I'm owner-building painted and the first quote came in as: Exterior painting including eaves and windows - $20,900.00 Interior painting including doors and windows - $28,600.00 There's nothing special about the house; about 350m2, rendered...I did specify Dulux Acratex for the exterior as opposed to standard Weathershield, but I worked out the additional paint cost (Acratex has less coverage) to be at most between $1-2,000.00 I haven't budgeted anywhere near $50,000 to paint my house Now I'm worried that I've either completely under-budgeted or I'm going to have to find someone "cheap and nasty" to do the job!! The guy who gave me this quote is 'Dulux accredited' and seemed to know his stuff...but surely this is a bit unreasonable?? Thoughts??? Thanks Adam Re: This painting quote must be a joke! Right?!?! :( 2Sep 22, 2009 7:43 pm I have no idea about the exterior paint job, but your interior one seems rather excessive!!! I'm in WA, and hte builder quoted me $6500 to paint my house! Which is a rather smallish 4x2. I'm doing it myself to save funds. I'd go and get some alternative quotes if i were you, as you may find a cheaper painter! Also maybe try home maintenance people maybe? viewtopic.php?f=31&t=22766 - my build thread! Time waits for no man. Unless that man is Chuck Norris. Re: This painting quote must be a joke! Right?!?! :( 5Sep 22, 2009 8:03 pm Thanks for the responses everyone...I'm going to get a few more quotes, I'm just really hoping this isn't the 'going rate' for decent paint jobs!! emilygirl :) My guess is they really dont want to do it... You think that might be the reason? The guy came to the site and then hand delivered a 4 page 'submission' to me! Re: This painting quote must be a joke! Right?!?! :( 7Sep 22, 2009 8:18 pm SuH I will ask hubby what ours was, 2 storey inside and out, guarantee nowhere near that, he wouldn't pay it. Thanks!! And if anyone happens to know any decent painters in the Canberra region, please let me know!! Adam Re: This painting quote must be a joke! Right?!?! :( 8Sep 22, 2009 8:23 pm I know it seems totally ridiculous. Our painter charged us $1500 just to repaint patches in the bedroom and kitchen when I had holes patched up that weren't meant to be where tradies cut them I think in the end they know they can charge more for small things, they have the paint etc....will let you know, costs just seem so bizarre dont they Re: This painting quote must be a joke! Right?!?! :( 12Sep 22, 2009 8:43 pm Not sure about the inside, but we have a 400sqm house and we are painting moroka finish to the exterior ourselves. Builder told us we are saving $7k. Does the exterior paint also include the rendering itself, if so, then I think this price is OK as I have been told rendering is two-three fold morokan finish, but unsure about the indoor. If that is the case then we ay consider painting the inside ourselves. I would love to find out what your other quotes are. Re: This painting quote must be a joke! Right?!?! :( 13Sep 22, 2009 8:47 pm SuH P.S. BuildACT.... was it you that was having that extraordinary kitchen ... has it happened ...do you have photos haha well, we like to think our kitchen will be pretty nice - but we're still a bit away from getting joinery started! Although, if it costs us $50,000 to paint...we might end up with portable BBQ and an Esky instead of a kitchen! Re: This painting quote must be a joke! Nope, doesn't include the render - and I've just checked the quote again and it's for Weathershield, not even the more expensive Acratex I'll definitely be getting a few other quotes...fingers crossed they're a bit closer to our budget!! Re: This painting quote must be a joke! Right?!?! :( 15Sep 22, 2009 9:06 pm Fruitcake! Then that does sound expensive, not to say I'm a pro at paint and labour costs. We've budgeted $2,000 for all paint materials for our 400sqm morokan exterior finish, including undercoat, so I guess labour would be around $5k. Again, pls keep us updated as to your other quotes. Tks Re: This painting quote must be a joke! Right?!?! :( 16Sep 22, 2009 9:13 pm It would actually be cheaper for you to go to a professional painting course, take annual leave off work, buy the paint, paint it yourself, and then go on holidays for a month, and still have money left over. Re: This painting quote must be a joke! Right?!?! :( 17Sep 22, 2009 11:24 pm My sister had the interior and exterior of a 2 storey weatherboard house painted for $10k in Melb. Yours sounds like daylight robbery.....are you funding the painter's next holiday or perhaps his own renovation? Re: This painting quote must be a joke! Yours sounds like daylight robbery.....are you funding the painter's next holiday or perhaps his own renovation? It sounds like it, doesn't it! I wasn't sure exactly what to expect, but nothing like that! Been ringing around today to try and get a few more quotes, unfortunately it seems like painters in Canberra are all too busy!!! Re: This painting quote must be a joke! Right?!?! :( 19Sep 23, 2009 6:20 pm Let's assume that he takes a month to paint each house, and takes 2 months off each year. Then he's getting $500,000 coming in yearly from painting. Take out $100,000 for the obviously expensive paints and custom made precision paintbrushes he needs to use, and that's still a pretty healthy income. Either that or he doesn't want the work, and figures he might as well try to find a sucker willing to pay that much. That seems likely if you can't find any other painters with enough time to do the job.
