Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 21, 2009 7:48 am Would like to hear from anyone who have installed ceiling fans at the time of building and then later on installed ducted aircon. Which rooms did you guys put the fans in? Did u find the fans still useful after the aircon installation? Re: Air con & Ceiling Fans - Homes in brisbane. 2Sep 21, 2009 9:18 am Wouldn't you use your ceiling fans on days when it isn't quite hot enough to turn on the a/c? We're not in Brissie, but we use our fans 95% of the time. They're an essential in my house! Re: Air con & Ceiling Fans - Homes in brisbane. 3Sep 21, 2009 11:10 am I'm in Brisbane, and both of the houses that I have built have had both fans and A/C. As stated by kb46, we use the fans when it is not hot enough for the airconditioning, and also at night. My wife doesn't like to sleep with A/C on, so we use that during the day, and fan at night. Because the house has been cooled all day, it doesn't get to hot at night with just fans. Also a lot cheaper to run fans that A/C. As to what rooms to put fans in, definatly the bedrooms, then if you can afford to, the living rooms. Also, DO NOT BUY CHEAP FANS. I did this with the first house (still around $100 each) and the noise drove me crazy at night. Re: Air con & Ceiling Fans - Homes in brisbane. 4Sep 21, 2009 11:18 am Thanks for your reply Kb46. Yeah u do have a point there. We do turn on fans mostly then aircon except during summer months. We are planning on having high ceilings and wondering how it will look with lights and fans positioning in bedrooms will it look odd as we will be installing ducted after handover. Do u recommend having fans in all rooms though? Agree it could be an added feature for the home but also the extra cost involved while doing the electricals. Re: Air con & Ceiling Fans - Homes in brisbane. 5Sep 21, 2009 11:32 am Thanks for your comments raw29983. Just seen your blog. Love your dark floor tiles to wet areas and the light bricks you have used. Can you tell me what they are? We too are thinking of using light brick and dark roof colour scheme. What stones have you used for your retaining wall in the back garden? Coming back to the point of ceiling fans do you have one in all your bedrooms then? Ours is going to be a 4bedroom home. We intially thought of putting one in the master bedroom and family room only. Re: Air con & Ceiling Fans - Homes in brisbane. 6Sep 21, 2009 8:40 pm Just something to think about when we talked to the air con guy we mentioned we are also going to put in fan, he told us the ducted air con system has a fan that you can run without turning onto the conditioner unit. Also if you are going to put in ceiling fan just make sure you have a batten in the ceiling to hold the weight of the fan. Thats great. It saves me putting fans in all rooms then. Do all ducted systems do that? What sort of system do u have? At one point i even thought of putting ceiling fans with lights on them inorder to save on adding extra electric points (ie having one point for light n another for fans) but am not sure if that will provide sufficient light to the rooms. Re: Air con & Ceiling Fans - Homes in brisbane. 8Sep 22, 2009 8:11 am we're in ipswich and after being in a rental property that doesnt have fans in the living rooms as well this is a must. we found last summer that it was too uncomfortable to sit in certain rooms that dont have ceiling fans on hot steamy nights we're going ducted so it will be interesting to do some checking if our daikin has the fan only option too and what kind of cooling this provides and at what kind of power consumption Blog - http://snakedr.blogspot.com/ Build Thread - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=12084&p=307406#p307406 Status - PCI 15/10. Re: Air con & Ceiling Fans - Homes in brisbane. 9Sep 22, 2009 1:52 pm With regards the the A/C units fan only option, I have a top to the line Panasonic unit that has this option, it does not move anywhere near as much air as a regular fan. Just another thing to think about. At the moment we only have a fan in the master bed, but as we have kids, we will add them the the other bedrooms. The brick that we have are PGH Perisher and the retaining wall is sandstone. - http://www.pghclay.com.au/Bricks/Defaul ... Does anyone have costs involved with the installation costs including reinforcing the ceiling for the fan itself? Re: Air con & Ceiling Fans - Homes in brisbane. 11Sep 22, 2009 10:35 pm ducted without ceiling fans. if I need the air disturbed a pedestal fan pointed directly at me will do the trick ’’Quondo Omni Flunkus Mortati ’’ If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy. I gladly removed the ceiling fans when I had ducted aircon installed. No more scary accidents with fans. The aircon has a fan mode, anyway. I also can't copy with flickering shadows from ceiling fans (even worse when someone has been silly enough to install a fan below a light). Re: Air con & Ceiling Fans - Homes in brisbane. 13Sep 23, 2009 9:01 am The first place we built in bayside Brisbane, we lived in for 3 years before putting aircon in. IMHO its much nicer to sleep on a hot Brisbane night under a ceiling fan that aircon. Some ppl may disagree. In new home we are putting ceiling fans in bedrooms only and hoping that the orientation, big sliding doors, insulation, and living a bit higher up for breeze will keep it cool enough in summer in the living areas. Later down the track we may put in ducted although if we can get away with it we will. You find in Brisbane the most uncomfortable times are from sundown till around midnight Put a ceiling fan on medium on the hottest night and you can almost guarantee that by morning you have pulled the sheets and covers up. We have also put one out on our alfresco. Seeing that our house sits ontop of a hill we are counting on the breeze to keep the house cool, we can always add aircon on later if the qld weather gets too unbearable. I have heard people talk about ducted a/c being expensive to run in comparison with single units because you can't just have it in your bedroom at night. You have to have the whole zone on, so you're cooling more space than you need to. Is this a myth? Are the ducted systems more efficient than the single units so it cancels out? Kylie Re: Air con & Ceiling Fans - Homes in brisbane. 16Sep 23, 2009 9:54 am The big trick with aircons is often the perception of the ppl in the house. As you move around the house with a split you will obviously have areas of warm and cool and the aircon can only reach so far. With the ducted and depending on how advanced, you can cool only certain zones and in some instances a zone can be separate bedrooms. Ducted systems are often more efficient in that they do not need to work as hard to keep the house as a set level. Sometimes with a split you will get warm and cool drafts as the cold air from the aircon pushes the warm parcel of air around. Ppl often mention they are sitting in a room with the aircon on and feel a warm breeze. With a ducted, this feeling is somewhat minimized. The key to any aircon i believe especially in Qld, is to get the aircon on early in the day for eg: home on weekends, put the aircon on at 8am, maybe even earlier because as we know once the sun comes up it gets hot very fast up here. This way you are not fighting against the warm air that has already started to enter the house. Another trick. Take a stupid hot day.. Think your aircon isnt working very well, go outside for a few minutes and then come back in. Its amazing how we adapt to the already set level but then feel we need it colder. You often see ppl wait until midday and its boiling outside then need to get the aircon to 17 to try and beat the heat. If the system has to run at 100% capacity to keep up a larger unit probably would have been a better selection. In my previous house we had 3 splits. 2 covered our living/family/kitchen etc etc (a big area), and 1 for the bedroom. With both area's we could turn on the systems and be nice and cool within a few minutes, and living in Ippy, it does get hot and sticky. Not sure if a big ducted system will be a different story, but ill find out in a month or so ;-P Blog - http://snakedr.blogspot.com/ Build Thread - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=12084&p=307406#p307406 Status - PCI 15/10. Cheers Kim Re: Air con & Ceiling Fans - Homes in brisbane. 19Sep 23, 2009 5:50 pm OMG if we wanted to live in the house first to see if fans were enough, how hard is it to install ducted after handover? With a normal roof on a single-storey house it is virtually as easy to install after the house is built. If you had a very low-pitched roof or raked ceilings or a 2-storey house, it would be pretty hard to install ducted air-con later. How do you remove one of these ceiling air con vents? And is it possible to disconnect the duct joined to the vent from inside the house, without going into the roof cavity? 0 5943 Hi all, sorting out the ducted air con for a 350sqm double story house.
