Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 17, 2009 2:31 pm Hi; great forum, just discovered it whilst trying to find out stuff about builders. Hubby and I are thinking of building (Sunshine Coast) and we are currently tossing up whether to build new, build to lockup and finish off or even just to stay put and renovate. *If* we build new, have narrowed down choice to 2 local builders, Dwyer Quality Homes and PJ Burns - has anyone got any experience with these builders? Good or bad? Seen some of the bigger ones at display villages, but have read many many negative posts re some of them (no names mentioned, the usual suspects). Also, can anyone advise whether building to lockup then completing the job ourselves will save much money (hubby is very handy, and works from home) - seen cost breakdowns from some builders and they are seriously mega overpriced - 5K for a water tank, 20k for a driveway, 9K to upgrade kitchen to 2pak!!!! any help much appreciated!!! I have a whole list break down and I opt to let the builder buile up the shell to lockup, and you do the rest..I mean your Hubby Re: DQH vs Burns vs build to lockup 4Sep 19, 2009 9:59 pm Hi there, we are also considering PJB so will be interested to see what sort of feedback you receive. There doesn't seem to be very much comment about them online, which can probably only be a good thing! Re: DQH vs Burns vs build to lockup 5Sep 21, 2009 9:20 am That's pretty much my POV; no news is good news. PJB are doing a lot in Brightwater at the moment; judging the the signs, they seem to have 2 houses for every other builder; but of course that might be because theirs was the first display home built there (a very nice home by the way, by far my favourite kitchen of all the display homes I have seen). We actually are considering them because we wanted to buy one of their existing houses on Kawana Island, and despite a gulf between buyer and seller, liked the floorplan so much that we figured they could build us a new one! Now we just have to find a lot to buy, in a decent area, for a non-astronomical sum (easier said than done on the Sunshine Coast). Re: DQH vs Burns vs build to lockup 6Sep 21, 2009 1:09 pm I have nothing but praise for DQH. My parents built with them back in 1991 and there is absolutely nothing wrong with the house today. I've been in rentals between 1 - 3 years old that have had signs of moderate to major slab movement resulting in internal walls and even external brickwork cracking. Great quality workmanship too. Al & Caitie- Building the Hamilton 278 (Coral) at Narangba Thank you so much everyone. This all makes a lot of sense. I guess when you talk to a builder who butters up everything to look very polished, you get to start believing… 7 17511 thank you! do we need to get this or our builder before we commence new build on the block? 2 10262 Hi, did you get any money from insurance? if you did, does it match what you've already paid the builders? 3 9559 |
