Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 16, 2009 8:29 am We just built a retaining wall on our left hand boundary and now the gap between the slab and wall is only about 86cms. Will this be enough space for scaffolding? Re: Space required for Scaffolding 2Sep 16, 2009 8:41 am It depends on how high you need to get. Scaffolds can be 600mm wide, but at that width can only get to a working platform of 1.8 metres (which will allow work to about 3.8 metres high). Unfortunately you will not be able to reach the roof of a double storey home with only 86 cms of width to work with. What's on the other side of the retaining wall and how high is it ? Can you bridge the wall to set up a scaffold ? Blog is now up - http://www.jbdave.blogspot.com/ Re: Space required for Scaffolding 3Sep 16, 2009 9:45 am We are building a two storey. The wall is about 1.2m high. It's made with besser blocks and we have bluemetal as backfill. The distance between the front of the wall and the boundary fence is about 60cm I guess (20cm for the blocks and 40cm fill). Could you bridge the scaffolding up on this? Would it damage the wall?? It's only new My SS never mentioned anything about scaffolding when we first discussed building the wall which we did privately not through the builder. Re: Space required for Scaffolding 5Sep 16, 2009 5:57 pm Hi Buildingadreamhome, Sorry I can't help with this one but I hope it all works out for you. Don't you just love these little things that crop up... Good luck with it all. Cheers Jon Jon Builing our First Home in Ridgehaven SA https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=23429&p=316543#p316543 Re: Space required for Scaffolding 6Sep 16, 2009 6:19 pm jbdave Unfortunately you will not be able to reach the roof of a double storey home with only 86 cms of width to work with. Are you sure? They can do some tricky stuff...no idea how safe though? On a ~4m section of my upper story the guys only had enough room to cantilever the boards above next doors house. There were enough posts on the ground floor to make the simple box shape that gives the scaffolding strength but only single poles protruding up. I had a company do the work so assume it was within regs (i hope). None of the trades complained (cladding, render or plumber) but I was crapping myself cleaning the window after render was done hehe!! Attachment didn't work? crap. Re: Space required for Scaffolding 7Sep 16, 2009 7:12 pm Thanks Jon and Dave. I'm sure they'll work out something. I'm sure it's not the skinniest envelope they've had before! Every week there is something!! Ask for some kickplate to be added and also for tradies to be requested to use lanyards on tools on that side of the building.
