The reason for the mortor on the brick may be due to the type of rod they have used. I was only recently talking to a break layer about this and apparently the new plastic rods do this. If you dont like this look you are best to find a brick layer that uses a rubber hose to joint his brick work. The result is a morter line that is softer and is customised to each brick.
