Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 13, 2009 7:48 pm Just wondering, for an outdoor tap does the builder need to provide some kind of drain? It's a bit late once the house is built though.... hrmm Ok, so what's the best way to set one up? Is it to put a grate/drain cover under the tap that is above a ditch that slopes away from the tap and away from the house to an area of the backyard and fill it with rocks to aid the drainage and then put soil on top or something like that? It must be connected to the sewerage system. Things may have changed, or not. It may be the same for your state. Re: Outdoor taps 9Sep 15, 2009 12:10 am Thats looks like a photo of the sewer vent, I wouldn't connect to that. Don't gully traps get connected to the sewer? Like a kitchen sink etc. I am pretty sure (for Vic anyway ) outdoor tap connected to stormwater is fine. This is the same storm water that your driveway grates etc would be connected to. That's what i'd have thought as well. However here in SA each time (2 houses) i've asked a plumber / stormwater person to add some drains n grates for my outdoor taps, they tell me they can't connect it to the stormwater pipes and it must connect to the sewer. I guess it's the sort of thing that varies state to state - it's not a topic i've looked into in any detail. Re: Outdoor taps 12Sep 16, 2009 2:59 pm So do most people get a drain put in under the outdoor tap? Seems silly not to. I'm never seen an outdoor tap without a drain (except for yours Lisa). Every house I've lived in has had one. Life is; then you tell yourself a story. Re: Outdoor taps 13Sep 16, 2009 7:28 pm oze So do most people get a drain put in under the outdoor tap? Seems silly not to. I'm never seen an outdoor tap without a drain (except for yours Lisa). Every house I've lived in has had one. Only on the first house, the second one I didn't. I won't again this time. Not sure why that is silly. There is always alternatives to a drain (eg use a bucket, use a hose on the lawn, use the laundry sink, etc). Re: Outdoor taps 16Apr 14, 2010 8:48 am Helyn I dont get it - why dont you just turn the tap off when the bucket gets close to full - I fill buckets for watering the garden all the time and they dont over flow at all If you have concrete under a tap especially it will fade over time with no "tap drain". They look good too. If worried about water damaging the colour or surface of what is under the tap, get a hose and attach it, then fill or wash whatever it is on the grass. Bathroom renovation will likely include a back-to-corner bath and we’re considering a freestanding tap with hand-held shower such as the picture included.
