Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 07, 2009 7:51 pm Hi everyone, We need Screw Pile Footing System for our new house, as it is too close to the easement. It costs us around $7k. But today we got an email from our builder and it says that due to the rock, Screw Pile Footing System have changed to Bored Piers. The cost is exactly the same. We just wonder what's difference between Screw Pile Footing System and Bored Piers. And how about the price. Appreciate any reply. George Re: Screw Pile Footing System and Bored Piers 2Sep 07, 2009 10:22 pm Screw piles are like a giant screw that is put in the ground. Bored piers (Which are also refered to as concrete piers) are where they dig out a deep hole and then fill it with concrete. Same end result, however from what I understand one is preferred over the other in certain circumstances. ie. if it is really wet, screw piles would be better than bored, also if there was limited access perhaps? Cost would depend upon depth and the diametre of the concrete pier. I found a reference on google for about $70 per linear metre for a 450mm pier. Never found out what a screw pile was worth. There are other considerations with the screw piles as well where a test pile needs to be done first to determine the actual depth they need to go to give you the required pressure. Gut feel is that the pier should be cheaper, more due to material cost than anything else, but nothing hard to back it up. Placement of the piers/piles is critical in relation to the slab ribs, I guess in your case with the rock, if they are putting in the screw piles and smashing into rock 1m+ down, it would make life very difficult, if the rock was thick, i doubt the pile would get through?. With the boring, maybe they are able to cut through it. If you find out any more details about price please reply back? I would be interested to know.
