Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 04, 2009 2:56 pm Hi, Just wondering if many people have gone with the option of having eaves on the North-facing side of your house only? Our builder doesn't do eaves as standard, but suggested if we'd like to, we can upgrade to North-facing eaves only (would be along the kitchen/meals/family room) for around $950. I've read some of the threads about passive solar energy etc and I'm tending towards ditching the eaves and sticking with blinds etc. Thinking it might look a bit odd with eaves down the left side of the house only, but as it would be behind the garage probably won't be noticeable unless pointed out? If anything, the sun is hottest in the afternoon in summer, so eaves would be best on the western side of the house to keep out as much of the summer heat as possible. I know that isn't what you asked, but I thought I'd just write it down in case it was an option for you Re: North-facing eaves only? 3Sep 05, 2009 6:52 pm To be honest all my previous houses had the standard 450mm eaves and in my opinion they do nothing to protect windows in Summer. I decided to save my money with this build and go without but it also depends on what look you like. I had a facade that I was quite happy with that had no eaves. Depending on the facade and style of home, some need eaves as they don't quite pull the look off. I have very good quality curtains (it used to be a family business) and this is very important when it comes to heating and cooling. The warning is on the sticker on the door too. Went ahead with the spring toggles and it all worked out… 7 5869 The two 15mm holes are obviously not compliant. The Dept of Fair Trading would love to see this one!
