Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 03, 2009 2:57 pm We are going to live on tank water for the first time in our lives and for the first time in our lives we have to decide how we are going to get the water from the tanks in our home and what is going to run where. I think it is very important to do it correctly and also complicated and I might need some expertise of you people here, please? We already decided that all three tanks should be able to deliver water to the house. So three pressure pipes will run from each tank to the one 800 KW pump sitting outside the Laundry and which tank is in use will be regulated by three taps that we want to position next to the pump. This way we can switch each tank ON/OFF from the house instead of having to go outside to where the water tanks are. They are concrete inground tanks. This is the situation we've got and I would like to know where you would position the filter for drinking water. 1 - 1 filter outside, so that all the water going into the house will be regarded as drinking water 2 - in each vanity under the basin in Bathroom and Ensuite + under the sink in the kitchen 3 - under the sink in the kitchen with two taps, one for drinking water and one for other use 4 - under the sink in the kitchen with just one tap? Please let me know what you think, are used to or would do. Thanks Re: Where would you put your filter for drinking water? 2Sep 05, 2009 5:36 pm I think it is great that you are going to live of tank water only. I'd like to be able to do something similar (but will probably just end up running the laundry and toilet off the tanks). With regards to filtering, I think it would depend on what your feeling is for the general drinkability of the water from the outset. By that I mean, if for some reason you were to drink water from an unfiltered tap, would you be concerned for your health?? If not, then I would just put the filter under the kitchen sink, or whichever tap you would normally use most for drinking water. That way, you will know that the vast majority of your drinking water is filtered, and bathroom taps for brushing teeth etc are most likely of decent quality anyway. Other than that, I would just make sure that all pipelines to your tank are as clean as they can possibly be. Use things like leaf eaters, and diverters for flushing the roof system for the first rains after the summer. I recently stumbled across this product from NZ too that looks like quite an interesting idea. It should help to ensure you draw the cleanest water possible from the tanks. Not sure if they are designed for underground tanks though. Best of luck, Chris Re: Where would you put your filter for drinking water? 3Sep 05, 2009 8:12 pm Thanks for your reply, Chris, very helpful to make up my mind. I think it is wonderful to live of tank water too. It gives a feeling of independance, doesn't it. I like the Water Boy but was adviced against a flexible suction pipe because it would float, so that seems to be a negative in inground tanks I assume. This advice came from the Pump House, which sold us all the equipment. So we ended up with PVCU suction pipes ending 200mm above the bottom of the tank. We are not really concerned about our health in regard to the use of unfiltered water in the bathroom, so a filter under the sink in the kitchen might be the best solution for us. As I do not like the two taps system for filtered and unfiltered water we probably will go for one filter and one tap. The house will have 13 downpipes which will come with leaf eaters and pipe screens. The only thing we have to do then is to screen the rest of the gutters. Re: Where would you put your filter for drinking water? 4Sep 05, 2009 9:55 pm are you going to use carbon filters ? if so they are rated to 2000L (10" models) so i would only filter the drinking water only as close as possible to the tap. Also by filtering the water with carbon filters DOES NOT make the water potable. Re: Where would you put your filter for drinking water? 5Sep 07, 2009 8:30 pm Thanks for your eply, Cyclone. I'm not sure yet what kind of filter we are going to use. I just discovered a couple of websites with several type of filters and got a little bit lost in the specifications. I am sure it is not going to be a Carbon filter if that one does not make the water potable. We have a filter in the caravan but I have to dive under the sink before I know what type that is. Re: Where would you put your filter for drinking water? 6Sep 08, 2009 11:38 am Is it a council requirement to have filters? Just curious as I live in an area where the majority of residents are 100% tank water, us included. We don't have any filtration apart from "screening" the water at various points before entering the tank. None of our neighbours do either. Thanks mate. Yeah good points!
