Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 31, 2009 11:17 pm Hi, Sorry to start a new thread on this as there's heaps on this forum but they mainly seem to concentrate on width and depth of the cavity but not much on the height... What's the standard / ideal height for the fridge cavity? Our builder and kitchen installer seem to have stuffed up and forgotten that we were having timber floors (40mm higher than slab level) so when they installed the kitchen they measured the hights from the bottom and now the overhead kitchen cabinets don't line up with the cupboard above the fridge, they should line up at the top but we just noticed that the fridge one is about 40mm higher (they obviously forgot about the timber floors). Currently our fridge cavity height is 1850mm (or at least that's what the plan says, we'll have to measure it tomorrow) so if we want to fix this symetry problem and make the cupboards line up at the top we'll need to move down the cubboard above the fridge approx 40mm, which will make the fridge cavity 1810mm high, is this too small? Haven't spoken to the SS yet as obviously the bulkhead will need to be fixed too, so not sure how possible this change/correction is. Hubby seems to think that we'll get used to this not alignment of the cupboards and that we should maybe not worry about it... Pics on the blog, what does everyone think? I didn't notice it last time I looked at your blog (it must have been referenced in another thread because I recognised the kitchen straight away ) Now that it's bothered you, though, I doubt you'd be able to overlook it yourself IYKWIM. I do think it would be unwise to move the cupboards lower unless you are sure you would have clearance for your fridge at 1810mm - that's quite restrictive. I just measured our fridge - 1860mm tall - so your current plan won't fit ours LOL! I would say "don't worry about it and leave it how it is" - but it isn't always that easy. Kylie Re: Fridge cavity - Height allowance & builder stuff up 3Aug 31, 2009 11:58 pm Thanks heaps Kylie! I hadn't noticed until tonight when hubby and I were looking at the pics and then got the kitchen drawings out to check... if I hadn't noticed then it would be ok but now I wonder if it will ever stop bugging me... Oh, your fridge is that high! wow, didn't realise they made them that high. That's what hubby says, that by bringing it down we will be restricting the height of future fridges and that might not be the best move... I guess making the builder re-do that cupboard is out of the question Why did we notice? Building a Wisdom Prosperity 23 - http://erwisdomprosperity.blogspot.com/ Re: Fridge cavity - Height allowance & builder stuff up 4Sep 01, 2009 2:05 pm Found the thread where I saw your kitchen before! Actually, if you have a look at the kitchen picture above yours, the fridge cupboards don't line up either. (I'm going to subconciously look for it in every kitchen picture I look at now, LOL!) kylie Re: Fridge cavity - Height allowance & builder stuff up 5Sep 01, 2009 2:15 pm Oh crikey. . . that's something I never even considered. . . we're having wooden floors too (33mm), and I think you may have just prevented something similar happening to us. Thanks Jochicho! Re: Fridge cavity - Height allowance & builder stuff up 6Sep 01, 2009 2:15 pm Hi Jochicho, Check out this thread it might help viewtopic.php?f=16&t=21807 Personally I would say don't worry about it, leave it as it is. But it's you that has to live with it Re: Fridge cavity - Height allowance & builder stuff up 7Sep 01, 2009 2:20 pm walker79 Check out this thread it might help viewtopic.php?f=16&t=21807 I think Jochicho would have to get the bulkhead altered as well if it was to be fixed up. Re: Fridge cavity - Height allowance & builder stuff up 8Sep 01, 2009 6:01 pm HI, Your kitchen looks fabulous and I didn't notice the different cupboard height until you pointed it out. However I believe that if you pay a lot of money (this is the biggest investment you will ever have) you need to be happy. It will keep bugging you every day. We are aslo having timber floors so i am glad you mentioned this. Do you mind if i ask what colour your timber and kitchen white cupboards are as we are having the same colour scheme and i keep second guessing but yours looks so amazing it makes feel much better. We are having balckbutt timber. Re: Fridge cavity - Height allowance, it's an optical illusion! 9Sep 01, 2009 10:20 pm Hi everyone, first of all I think an apology is in place to our builder as the cupboards are in line at the top! Yep, after all this we managed to get into the house this afternoon and got on top of a paint bucket and managed to measure from the floor up and they are all at the same height at the top and when you opend the door of the left cupboard it pretty much lines up with the one above the fridge! How embarassing! I think the optical ilusion happens because the fridge cupboard is not at the same level as the kitchen ones, is further forward (closer to the island) and we two short ar#es took the pic from the floor so we add to the illusion! I guess is also the combination of the high ceilings! Oh well, it's all good now but thanks HEAPS everyone for all your suggestions, help and support, walker79 and Kb46 I was ready to get the cuboard cut to size! jodge Oh crikey. . . that's something I never even considered. . . we're having wooden floors too (33mm), and I think you may have just prevented something similar happening to us. Thanks Jochicho! Hi jodge, I guess it didn't happen this time but I will be worth to remind them of your timber floors height so no problems arise anyway! kec2712 HI, Your kitchen looks fabulous and I didn't notice the different cupboard height until you pointed it out. It must be a good feeling to be wrong!!!!! Re: Fridge cavity - Height allowance, it's an optical illusion! 12Sep 02, 2009 9:18 pm Thanks Kb46 and Jodge!
