The other half of the ideal solution is to lock the whirlbird in winter and use a fan in winter to push the nice warm air in the roof space into the living portions of the house. I don't know about your roof space, but during winter my roof space is cold, so there's no nice warm air to pump into the house. Do you have sarking?
