Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 30, 2009 12:53 am So.... my BF and I thougth our smartwire company was looking after our phone connecteions. But last night we realised we never picks a spot of the lines in the house. After a few enquries to my parents who have built multiple times they said that Telstra should have called us??? We have a house 6-8 weeks from completion without a single phone line put in? How did everyone find out they needed to call Telstra and organise this before building? We were instruction form our builder only to connect gas, water and electricity. Telstra was never mentioned and we just assumed someone was putting some sort of allowance for Telstra? *Built with Gemmill Homes in WA* Slab - 1st June 2009 Plate Height - 17th June 2009 Lock Up - 18th August 2009 PCI - 5th October 2009 Hand Over - 15th Oct 2009 https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20844 Re: Calling Telstra BEFORE you build? 2Aug 30, 2009 1:03 am Our builder is putting in the telephone sockets for us. Choosing their location was part of our electrical plan. We then have to contact Telstra to organise the actual connection of the line. We found out that we have handover on Friday so we called Telstra today and have booked in to have the technician come out to connect the line on Monday 7th. We were pleasantly surprised as we had heard about people having several weeks delay before they could get the connection done. Telstra charge a connection fee of $299 which will appear on your 1st phone bill. I have to organise a technician to get internal wiring & phone socket during the construction. Then after handover, I have to organise the trenching. Last step is contact Telstra to get the connection. My understanding is that Telstra does not do the trenching. Correct me if I'm wrong. Re: Calling Telstra BEFORE you build? 5Aug 30, 2009 10:16 am Hi wim3, Did your builder tell you specifically that they don't do a phone connection? The other interesting thing is that we were told we are nto allowed any other contractors on site during our build. Which would make it hard to have telstra wire our phone in. Probably also why I didn't think about it. *Built with Gemmill Homes in WA* Slab - 1st June 2009 Plate Height - 17th June 2009 Lock Up - 18th August 2009 PCI - 5th October 2009 Hand Over - 15th Oct 2009 https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20844 Re: Calling Telstra BEFORE you build? 6Aug 30, 2009 1:49 pm Yep same happened here Manda. We need smart wiring. I went to intelligent homes and they are saying it is much easier if its all put in your contract with the builder as then they are allowed on site. If thats not the case we have to call them after handover to come and do it. We did get conduit points put in at prestart and she said thats definitely the right thing to do there. But we do need a powerpoint in the roof and some other things. GRRR I sending a letter back with my final plans etc stating that everything electrical that we needed to get the smart wiring done should of been bought up or mentioned at prestart. I only got the intelligent homes letter the other day and went to see them straight away. Kat Re: Calling Telstra BEFORE you build? 7Aug 30, 2009 4:45 pm Standard in VIC is for the sparky to run the internal cable to a junction box at the front wall of the property, then a call to Telstra organises rest. They provide a local contractor to dig the trench and wire it to the house and juntion box, then telstra connect at the exchange. They include up to 10-15 metres of trench, then charge $10 per metre after that. A little suggestion. When you do this ask your 'trencher' to dig a trench under where your driveway will go, and put in a 100mm plumbing pipe, seal at both ends, and bury. This way you can run irrigation pipe and low voltage lighting under your driveway with ease. Juat remember where your pipe starts and ends. Adrian B Re: Calling Telstra BEFORE you build? 8Sep 01, 2009 10:09 pm Just to close this off. We called around and we are getting two points into the house already throught eh smart wire people! That was close to a big mistake! *Built with Gemmill Homes in WA* Slab - 1st June 2009 Plate Height - 17th June 2009 Lock Up - 18th August 2009 PCI - 5th October 2009 Hand Over - 15th Oct 2009 https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20844 Re: Calling Telstra BEFORE you build? 9Sep 02, 2009 9:49 am we moved in to our new house couple of weeks ago, we called telstra to get the line connected who passed on our request to a subcontractor , who again passed on our job to someother contractor to dig the trench and put the lines down, all up it cost us $180 to dig the trench and put the cables ($80 if you dig the trench yourself)plus $299 telstra charges. Re: Calling Telstra BEFORE you build? 10Oct 11, 2009 6:08 am I hope you all excuse my ignorance here but could someone tell me this .... we have had our initial smartwire install (not by builder) and the rest will be completed once the house is completed in around 6 weeks. The smartwire people are wiring up the phone, internet, foxtel and TV and we are having points in all rooms through a server - my question is - is all we need to do now is ask Telstra to come out and run the wires to the house and connect? Im a little confused as to what needs to be done? Do we need the electrician to do anything? If anyone can tell me what we need to have done that would be wonderful as Im a real dummy with these things! We didn't have anything in the contract asking the builder to connect this for us.
