Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 28, 2009 12:00 am Hi We are building a two storey home and are about to sign off on the contracts in the next couple of weeks. We have designed a bedroom to the rear of the upper floor which consists of a retreat/sitting room to the left and the bedroom to the right, with a WIR separating the two. There is a double door entry with around 1 metre of space ahead (then the WIR). The bedroom then has an open hotel style ensuite with free standing bath etc. Both sitting and bedroom have doors onto a balcony, however as we want sliding doors from the sitting room, this has pushed the WIR further into the bedroom part. The question is whether we should put the sliding doors in the bedroom (there is only room for one set of sliding doors, the other door is a single alluminium) and take the space there rather than the sitting. Dimensions work out at - sitting room 4x4.5 and bedroom 4x3.5 (with open ensuite 3x3). Would be interested in other's comments about which way round they would have it - larger bedroom or sitting room? We are thinking that the bedroom will have a bed and no more whereas we will spend more time in the sitting room but as this is the first house we have built would be open to a second opinion or two.......! Cheers Re: Bigger bedroom or retreat? 2Aug 28, 2009 9:31 am It depends entirely on what will suit you. We have a massive bedroom with retreat, and I know many people think it's ridiculous and a waste of space, but we use it daily (we have teenagers who we like to escape from ). It's all one open space though, as it's unlikely that one of us will want to be sleeping while the other is reading or watching TV - and even if we do, there are plenty of other living rooms to use... If you feel that having the spaces separate is essential, then go with it. You'll get a more spacious feel if it's all one area, but that might not work for you in a practical sense. As for open hotel-style bathrooms, no thanks. I think they look lovely, but are completely impractical. I don't want an audience when I'm in the bathroom , and I don't need to have splashing water and bright light disturbing my sleep when my husband is up at 5:00am to head off on a business trip either. If you like to share everything though, maybe it'll work for you. I think I know the answer but just checking to see if anyone has had experience with it.
