Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 04, 2007 12:13 pm Our builder has advised us that they will begin construction of our house on the 18th June.
This date is subject to the weather, so hopefully it won't be rained out. It seems like a lifetime away but after what we have been through, it is a real relief. <<<WARNING - high sarcasm area ahead>>> We moved to Melbourne in Dec 05, and made an offer on the land in Jan 06. The subdivision was not quite finished, just waiting for something from my good friends at council. By April, it was discovered that the thing needed from council wasn't actually needed and the sale finally went through. We immediately instructed our builder that we want to proceed, so the snail race began. Who could do things more slowly, council or the builder??? By about late July or early August, we had something to submit to council which by late August advised us to try again. We were given 3 months by council to resubmit most of our application. For the first couple of months, I was under the impression that our builder was doing all of this for us. Not a chance, I finally got a straight answer out of them, they would redo drawings at our request but all the planning statements, fire reports, septic plans, landscaping plans etc had to be done by us. We contacted council and got an extra month added to the time allowed to us to resubmit and finally got everything together 1 week before the deadline. We did investigate paying a professional company to do all of this for us and all they wanted was $5000. (Only $90 to write a 3 line letter to council requesting the time extension) I found a friend of a friend of a friend (I kid you not) who is a planning officer who did all the statements for us privately for under $1000. We did the rest ourselves. Anyway, we got it back to council at the end of Nov and they only took until late March this year to approve it. Then we had the builder suddenly caught off guard without a building permit (oh and that needed the septic to be approved which council had forgotten about), Drawing needed redoing and some colour and paperwork issues. Then we find we need a asset protection permit. Sigh. Finally we are told that 18th June is the start date. Somehow my enthusiasm has become somewhat tempered over the last 18 months. Our original plan to be in a new home 4 to 6 months after our arrival in Melbourne seems highly nieve now. 3xb Re: We have a start date 2Jun 04, 2007 12:47 pm Hey 3xb,

We can certainly understand the pleasures of dealing with the good old S.O.Y.R!! But time now for the exciting part! Built Porter Davis "Dromana" 2007. Thanks mate. Yeah good points!
