Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 18, 2009 1:27 pm Hi, I am building a new home and so far things are progressing very well. Sure, I have had the odd issue/defect/problem, but to the builder's credit, each of these issues have been been sorted out in a timely fashion. The plasterboard's in now and the carpenter is doing the architraves and skirting. My issue with the carpenter is that he smokes inside the house (all closed up) and every morning when I enter the house I get a slight smell of smoke. I also do know that plasterboard can get tainted with smoke as it is a porous product and will absorb the smell. Are there any ways/laws/regulations that I can pull up to prevent any more smoking inside the house. I have nothing against smokers and I dont mind him smoking OUTSIDE the house. Oh ! and another thing - cigerrette butts on the floor ! Suburbia is where the developer bulldozes out the trees, then names the streets after them. Re: SMOKING inside a new home with plasterboard installed. 2Aug 18, 2009 1:35 pm Hi, we had this happen at our place too I remember feeling slightly p'd off at the time, but quickly shrugged my shoulders, as I thought that any damage done would only be very minimal (ie a couple of days worth... would it really make that much of difference once we were living there?) and I knew the paint fumes would soon drown out any smell too. Personally I would not say anything because the unpleasantness created by the confrontation would not be worth it, FOR ME, plus what if they decided to do something horrible and immature to your house as a result ... like not bother finishing things off properly, or whatever? What kind of floors are they? I saw a couple of butts on my wood floors but this was before they got sanded & polished so I didn't care too much. Sorry I don't know of any laws you can pull out to stop it from happening ... just giving you another 'don't sweat the small stuff' point of view. Good luck! Re: SMOKING inside a new home with plasterboard installed. 3Aug 18, 2009 1:43 pm Yeah, it would really rub me the wrong way too! But, I'm inclined to agree with donuts - there's nothing to gain from the confrontation other than badwill towards yourself, so don't go there! There might be a time when you need that guy on your side. Yes, but you will also be painting the plaster and seeling it in! When I build my first house, my painter was NOT without a *** in his mouth the whole time, it’s a wonder he didn’t set fire to himself. When we moved in, the smell of the new carpet and paint over took anything he left behind. I cant fault your advice guys ! Yes I agree that it is sometimes better to ignore the small things so that the big picture does not suffer... Having said that, I did phone up the supervisor and asked him (very nicely ) whether he could request his tradies to smoke outside. I did this before I posted this message. having read your replies, I'll leave it alone and not push the issue any further. Thanks ! Re: SMOKING inside a new home with plasterboard installed. 6Aug 18, 2009 2:12 pm I had exactly the same issue, except it was the painters who smoked in the house. On my last inspection there were butts around the place, and I asked my SS if it were at all possible to ask the tradies not to smoke in the house, especially as 3 of us are asthmatics. I haven't been back inside since, but the place has been cleaned so I assume no one else will smoke in it. I'd be pretty peeved if I find butts at our PCI inside... I certainly couldn't smell it when I went inside, and my nose is pretty sensitive to it. Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! Frustrated me no end, but the paint and everything else totally covered it, and also figured to be greatful for a quality finish rather that something after I peeved them off Ready and waiting to start our extention in Dec '09 - bring it on !!!! Re: SMOKING inside a new home with plasterboard installed. 8Aug 18, 2009 5:24 pm I agree with everyone else - my house even has no smoking signs put up by the builder! We are getting timber floors installed this week and the fixer will be back after that, I might make a gentle mention to the SS that since we are responsible for the floors it would be great if people didn't smoke inside, or at least didn't throw hte butts on the floor! I won't make too big deal of it though... I agree, you don't want them to do a crappy job because of that... Re: SMOKING inside a new home with plasterboard installed. 11Aug 18, 2009 9:26 pm Ring your supervisor and tell him that if the tradies keep smoking in it, you will have new plaster installed. I am an ex smoker, and find that I can smell the smallest amounts of smoe now. It doesnt bother me, but if your family is non smoking, then you will notice it. Adrian B Re: SMOKING inside a new home with plasterboard installed. 12Aug 18, 2009 10:01 pm One of our plasterers smoked inside the house too which did not impress me either and l smoke myself! I mentioned it to my SS and he assured me that once painting starts, there is a zero smoking in the house policy. So l think at your stage, whilst it is very annoying, just ride it out as the smell will disappear but make sure that once painting starts, your SS puts signs up and/or ensures your tradies aren't puffing away in your home. Re: SMOKING inside a new home with plasterboard installed. 13Aug 19, 2009 9:43 am The smoked in ours right up until it was cleaned last week..... I also agree with the others its not that big a deal and you don;t want to get anyone offside over something so small.... Our neighbours had to gett heir lounge room carpet replaced because their was cigarette burn in it - shows they smoked right up to the end in their place! 2nd build here we come in Whittlesea! https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=92617 1st Build - Henley - Cooper in Doreen!
