Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 10, 2009 8:46 am Hi all, question again, I'm afraid. Yesterday we had people over and our future house was discussed and with that the Electricity. The visiting guy had done a couple of renovations in the past and mentioned that the electrical wiring of the house would probably be 1mm thick. Hubby thought that it would be 1.5 at the least. Does anybody know what standard wiring in the Tender means and do we have to ring the Electrician in an early stage and ask him for an upgrade? If so, any ideas about the costs? Also, we were not going to have Insulation to the Internal Walls but decided on Acoustic 70mm last week. Will that have any impact on the Electrical Plan of the Electrician? Start Date will be at the 21st of August but the SS told us that the contracters will not have the plans before the 18th of this month. Will there be enough time to make changes if necessary? Thanks Re: Upgrade Elecrical Wiring necessary / possible? 2Aug 10, 2009 10:29 am What? Are you talking about the thickness of electrical wire? Have you seen electrical wire up in your roof? The earth wire is multi-strand (I believe) and that alone would be thicker than 1mm, then there's a coloured layer of insulation around each wire, then there's a white layer of insulation around all 2 or 3 wires. Try more like 6mm thick by 12mm wide. As for your questions: (1) speak to the electrician ASAP (or at least the builder); (2) they can charge what they want, so negotiate; (3) not likely; (4) not likely. Re: Upgrade Elecrical Wiring necessary / possible? 3Aug 10, 2009 12:34 pm I think you're worrying too much about something that is worth no concern at all. All wiring is compliant with Australian Standard design rules so I highly doubt you'll have any problems and i'd stop listening to renovations guy who I doubt is licenced to even touch anything electrical. The only thing i'd be worried about is the electricians putting enough circuits in your house, rather than running everything off only a few circuits. Request extra - eg one/two for aircon (split system), one for pool pump, if you have extra power points to the standard electrical plan, make sure that another circuit is installed and same goes for lights. We're in a rental at the moment and if you turn on 75>% of the lights, the light circuit will trip (overloaded). Who's your electrician btw? I agree that I am worrying too much and I had forgotten about the AS. I hope that Hawk is right and that the wire is upgraded to 1.5 though. Your reminder about the circuits is very much appreciated and we are going to add it to the Electrical TO Discuss List. We just decided on three Aircon Split Systems and Speedheat in Ensuite and Bathroom, so the more circuits the better I guess. I am afraid I don't have a name of the Electrician, just a Phone Number. The SS was using his mobile and the reception not too good so I missed out on the name. cheers Currently renovating, and our main lounge is 5m x 10m, with a cathedral roof peaking at 6.5m high. Currently have tiles on concrete slab. Room is very hard to heat. I am… 0 4822 You can wash over existing pavers with 10% solution of water and hydrochloric acid, then wash off. The acid will provide for required bond key with new concrete. 1 36968 0 9828 |
