Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 11, 2009 7:17 pm Hi everyone, We got to the great stage of bricking until we saw our bricks or more appropriately the way they were laid. We have our concerns, but would like your opinions, we feel that the bricks don't line up but we also don't want to be too fussy/picky. Here are some photos of the bricks. We are using the smaller bricks for the front of the garage. Is it just me or does the expansion gap become wider at the top? Cheers Lam & Genevieve Re: Help with your opinions on dramas with our bricks 2Aug 11, 2009 8:57 pm I would not be happy with that work! I wonder if they thought the wall was going to be rendered (which I assume it is not) so didn't take too much care. Once the excess mortar is cleaned up it will look abit better but the bricks at the top will still be out of alignment. I would be calling your site supervisor straight away. Easier to get it fixed now than later. Those lines certainly do not match up, even without cleaning that is obvious. I would be concerned, very concerned and would definitely get the SS on to it before much more gets done. JL Re: Help with your opinions on dramas with our bricks 4Aug 11, 2009 9:47 pm hi, I'm sorry to see another person/ customer treated with disrespect in relation to the finish, cost of bricks and the labour fees paid to these companies and trades persons. You are not receiving value for money. Your house has lose its appeal and I hope that you can make your s.s see that this brickie is blind ,messy and incompetent and should be removed from this job. I doubt the mess will clean off as it is thick and the bricks are not very smooth, and cleaning wont realign them anyway. If this is the start of the job it will be worse by the end. Act quickly , if the s.s wont help ,then start going higher. Many people on this forum have similar brickwork issues and most remain unrepaired or unsatisfied with the repair. Good luck
Re: Help with your opinions on dramas with our bricks 6Aug 11, 2009 9:53 pm i dont believe you will recieve the same look as the display house. The mortor lines are too thick and dont line up like you say. It seems they bricklayer was being lazy as he couldnt be bothered cutting the correct size brick up top where he has timber in the way. Re: Help with your opinions on dramas with our bricks 8Aug 11, 2009 10:31 pm I wouldn't be happy with that. I don't think you are being picky either. If these are at the front of your house, which is generally a focal point i would be stamping my foot and demanding to have it reapaired. My husband is a brickie and he just said he would not "get away with crap like that." Talk to your site supervisor. Building a H3nl3y Charleton- its a home, not a house. Re: Help with your opinions on dramas with our bricks 9Aug 11, 2009 10:32 pm no way, that looks like two different brickies have been working on it. I'd def be asking them to re do that corner! A thankful person is a happy person. So sorry to hear this has happened to you. As previously advised, speak to your SS straight away and email them those pictures as evidence. Re: Help with your opinions on dramas with our bricks 11Aug 11, 2009 11:10 pm Nope you not being fussy or picky....it's just plain lazy & sloppy brickwork and unacceptable. Very unfortunate that this happened to you. As others have said, get onto your SS pronto and request/demand that it be re-done. If you accept that kind of ** workmanship now, then your giving your brickie free reign to screw up the rest of the house. Am darn sure you don't want that! Hope this is resolved for you pormptly, keep us updated. Re: Help with your opinions on dramas with our bricks 12Aug 11, 2009 11:14 pm i am pretty sure some of that brickwork is outside of australian standards, particulary the gap between the bricks...it is not allowed to be more than 15mm, and yours look like they are. I dont know what the rules are about the vertical grouts lines lining up between courses, but it dosnt look right to me. say something before the house is finished so they can rectify it early. Re: Help with your opinions on dramas with our bricks 13Aug 12, 2009 9:33 am Thanks for all your advice and opinions everyone. I spoke to the Builder this morning and have also sent him the photos that I have posted up here. He said he will be meeting with the bricklayer on site to see what happened as he can see that it is misaligned. He knows we are very unhappy with the results and said he will do what he can to make us happy again. He said worse comes to worse he will demolish the bricks and get it redone again. Genevieve and I made it quite clear that we don't want this drama happening again when they start bricking the entertainment side of the house. Fingers crossed it gets sorted out soon. Ahhhh dear, the dramas and stress of building Thanks once again for all the replies, will let you guys know the results. This is true. The gap between the bricks (perpends) is not allowed to be more than 15mm. Looking up your wall the perpends should not run out by any more than 15 mm also. This is the standard. How I know this is because I got an independent inspector out and he picked up the exact same thing on my house. If they give you grief contact your brick manufacturer and see if they can give you a copy of the acceptable standards. Re: Help with your opinions on dramas with our bricks 15Aug 12, 2009 12:39 pm Hi Lam, I also had this issue where the perpends did not line up on my brickwork in a few places. I took photos and pointed it all out to my SS. Mine where pretty minimal compared to the photos you have posted, and I put mine down to the rustic nature of my bricks (Daniel Robertson's Hawthorn Tan), which vary in length and width. I also came to the conclusion that this was not on the front facade, nor at eye level, so I was willing to let it slide. To tell you the truth, now the house is almost complete, I really haven't given it another thought. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ _ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ For your brickwork, I would most definitely be asking for it to be re done, as it does look messy and 'lazy' and especially if it is on your front facade, and the 50mm bricks are a feature. Nice bricks BTW, are they Tawney Heritage? Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! Nice bricks BTW, are they Tawney Heritage? I don't mind if the bricks are misaligned here and there, I don't expect it to be 100%, If it was like your house Stormy, I would have no issue at all. Gee wizz you are good, one shot and got our bricks.. Arghhhh... It's driving me mad now, Genevieve and I can't stop looking at peoples bricks and seeing if they line up or not, it's giving me serious headaches. LOL obsessed much??? Re: Help with your opinions on dramas with our bricks 18Aug 12, 2009 1:27 pm Haha...I only knew they were Tawney Heritage because they were at one stage on the list to get them if we went waaaaay over budget on the Dan Robs!! I was in exactly the same boat as you and looked at everyone's bricks to see if they lined up! It's very disappointing when you want everything to be perfect and it's not quite. I also had a few 'issues' with my AJ's too, that they didn't all look even. Once they were filled with the coloured silicone/putty stuff I didn't notice it at all. Can't even remember which one didn't look 'quite right' now! I was very obsessive! I would let your SS know that re bricking is the only option due to it being in the feature 50mm's and on your front facade. It really is a bit of a dogs breakfast in that corner IMHO. Good Luck! So its worth pushing the issues especially if your not happy, your paying ALOT of money to a builder you want the job done properly! Looks horrible, what the hell was the brickie thinking putting cut bricks in the middle. Anyone with half a brain would have realised that was a stupid idea.
