We're quite amazed that other than the outer brickwork, the houses here don't have any concrete or solid internal walls! We're from Germany and houses are built very differently over there. For a start, all houses are built with a basement/cellar. External walls comprise bricks at least 50cm thick before 2 layers of insulation. It is also compulsory now for new houses to tap natural energy from the ground for heating and cooling. Hydronic heating is commonly used (since like forever) and double glazing is also standard. The only wood you'd have is the roof framework. One would say that the seasonal weather in Europe warrants different building methods...but we don't think so. With the constant variable weather changes here in VIC, you'd think that wood would be used less (since wood contracts and expands so easily). Otherwise, regardless of the size of housing, conscientious usage of utilities (water, gas, electricity) would ensure that we all play our part in being environmentally conscious.
