Mine would dig in his heels & that would be that I don't often get my own way like that, it was a one off but I was going to go back for that light if I didn't get it then Re: How Devious are you? 24Oct 31, 2009 12:32 am Pugs my partner has full rein over the Kitchen, Bathroom and bedroom fittings... my domain will be the study and HT, and the data cabling.. proberly going to sink like 1KM of Cat6 and RG6 plus other types of av cabling... Just revisiting my little thread here. . . we are currently in the throes of doing the electrical plans and trying to work out things like speaker and data cabling . . . apart from work, it's taking up most of my time with the research. . . when oh when will i get my life back? Pugs! You're networking your whole house! Hurrah! Until very recently I thought that home networks were for nerds, (I should know, I work with software and firmware engineers). . . but in the last week, I've had the full extent of the possibilities laid out in front of me by my boss (huge computer genius who's set up his own network at home, has a server with 4 TV cards, TV screens dotted about the house and runs the lot through MythTV or something like that! He showed me what it can do and it's amazing. .. he designed the system himself (in linux I think). . . and laughed at my diagram of how I was going to connect the Theatre room and Family room TV ensembles up so we could watch through any of the media in either room at the same time (it would work, but apparently using RCA cables and cheap ebay $20 four-port switch boxes may lessen the signal somewhat). Anyway, not being a linux whiz, I don't see myself having anything near the system he's got for his TVs, though he has talked me into running network cables throughout the house and terminating them all (along with all the other services) in a central place that isn't the study or a linen closet, and shoving in an ethernet switch and patch panel. I told Phil that I'd like to run some data cables probably about a year ago (and I was just thinking back then about having extra ports for internet and phone). . . Phil wasn't keen, he thought it was going to cost a fortune. Then tonight I found a website (for a company in Sydney) where I can get Cat5e cable for $90 for 305metres and Cat6 cable for $125 for 305metres. . . BARGAIN!!!!!!!!! Now I'm even going to lay cables to the toilets!!!!! (Phil's asleep but I'm going to go wake him up and tell him the prices! Any tips? Boss said something about Cat6 being more difficult to terminate. . . I haven't started my research yet, but I suppose I should. We're having extra conduit put in the walls so that he can network everywhere... he also laughed at your laying cables quote.... boys minds are all the same! He also suggested that you check that the cable works with the wall plug/face plate the you're using (some IDC connectors require single core wires). He said its likely to work but good idea to check before you end up with kms of cable [pls note this dictated by DH and I have no idea what it means ] Never argue with an idiot they drag you down to their level & then beat you with experience - Dilbert View Thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=19733 Contract signed 14Sept Slab 30Sept Bricks laid 1Dec Lock up 26Feb Keys 10Jun Re: How Devious are you? 31Oct 31, 2009 9:20 am I got a laugh out of this thread. I don't usually have to be devious - when it came to choosing colours, tiles, and pretty much everything else, my lovely husband just said: "You know I have no taste - whatever you want will be fine".
When the electrical selection came in at $3000 more than we'd allowed for, thanks to my total overkill on lighting and power points, he just rolled his eyes and signed it. The roof tiles that were a $5000 upgrade? No problem. All the paint upgrades - about $4000 worth? By that time, he wasn't even blinking at the cost. Of course, he did insist on a few things: the timber bifolds, the upright cooker, the dumper showerhead, the appliance cupboard....all of which I wanted anyway, but I sighed and let him "win" on those. Now "we're" working on a landscape plan for the back yard. I have a feeling it's going to go my way... Cat6.. installed prfessionally... other wise it is an Illegal set up... and the cable needs to be solid core.. most bed rooms shoujdl have at least 2 sockets for A study area mimmum of 4 i would max out at about 16, for HT and "main" TVs i would put up to 6 Kodiak Data Cabling onFaceBook Consult*, Design and Installation Data, TV, Home Theatre/ AV Cabling, Multi Room Audio, IP CCTV and Door Intercoms Ask for a Quote. *DIY DATA Cabling Is Ilegal Re: How Devious are you? 39Oct 31, 2009 6:34 pm Ladies you are pure inspiration. We didnt have much to really argue about. We had all the same tastes in colours etc. He went nuts data cabling the house - but thats fine.. coz Im sure it will be to my benefit also hehe. For reference we have 4 points in home theatre/ 4 points in study.. and at least 1-2 in every room of the house cept bathrooms. Our builders sparky did it for us at $75 a cable. That includes hooking it up to the patch panel thingo (may have used wrong terminology there). OH has gone to the extent of getting a rack and will put a server in etc. I think its overkill.. but hey his business paid for it so I cant complain! Only thing im disagreeing on is paying 3k for a purebred puppy that will be arriving almost the same week we move in. Timing on payment is not great! But Ive said im not cleaning up after the dog.. so its his problem.. lol that will be an interesting one ! OH also wanted cement in certain places around the house (for air con units etc) so I let him get his way there as well.. but I shall have my way with getting the good turf not the **** stuff! bring on the fight! haha Re: How Devious are you? 40Oct 31, 2009 7:24 pm When we built, I wasn't exactly 'devious'. But I have been told since that I was the STEAM-ROLLER! I designed every detail of the house, and most of the colour schemes and finishes were what I (we) chose. Ash.
