Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 07, 2009 5:56 pm For those of us building a house with a spouse (oh, it's rhyme time). . . tell us about the lengths you've gone to, to get your own way. . . Here's one from me. . . . . . he said he didn't like waterfall benchtops. . . I like them and want them. . . I kept my mouth shut and randomly showed him photos of kitchens with waterfall benchtops. . . AT LAST a couple of weeks ago he said "I like what they've done with that benchtop coming down the side of the cupboard" BINGO! Now I don't say a word about it, and I arrange the quotes for the benchtops. . . My motto . . . quiet persistence is king! Re: How Devious are you? 3Aug 07, 2009 7:25 pm I found a light for the void in our house when we were out shopping. I didn't say anything & then I let him find it & then said omg that's beautiful. When he asked the price he nearly died on the spot, not too long after he said Oh that's not that bad!!!! So guess what we are having it installed on Sunday!!!! And here it is: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We now have a blog. http://allaboutthebuild.blogspot.com/ Re: How Devious are you? 4Aug 07, 2009 7:40 pm my partner has full rein over the Kitchen, Bathroom and bedroom fittings... my domain will be the study and HT, and the data cabling.. proberly going to sink like 1KM of Cat6 and RG6 plus other types of av cabling... I say "what do you think of this cabinet hon?" - oh yeah he says, that's really nice. I say "it costs $3,000!" he says, "OMG, that's expensive", I say, "yeah I bought one, but it's ok, I got it half price!" - he says "Wow half price"! Job done. A thankful person is a happy person. He was happy that he was the one who found the table, but not so happy when he saw the $2400 price.....then the chairs I wanted, another $330 each. He liked them the whole look so we bought them and they are in a spare bedroom at his house all in the boxes still, we havent even started building yet It better look good! We both have the same ideas and oppinions on everything so far which is good. DA approved Waiting on a few more Builder's quotes. Re: How Devious are you? 10Aug 08, 2009 5:21 pm Am I right in thinking that most of these devious acts were committed by WOMEN??? MwHaHargh! We shall take over the world one day! My other half really wanted a tin roof. . . I secretly wanted a tin roof too, but let him think that I would be quite happy with tiles (and an extra $8K in our pockets). . . eventually I "gave in" and "let him have" his tin roof. . . but only if I got something I wanted. . . Keep it coming ladies (and gent). . . I have so much more to learn! The only thing I am insisting on, for the whole build. . . is a F!sher and P@ykel d!sh dr@wer dishwasher. . . I have been waiting for one for many many years, they're just soooo much easier to use (and it's just Phil and I, so just being able to load one drawer per night is perfect). He said "you gotta have it, so you gotta use it!" Re: How Devious are you? 13Aug 09, 2009 1:09 am Annietom mine is along the line of Suh's... I was pushy with certain interior decorating decisions, certain fans and lights, data cabling, phone points etc, stuff she had little interest or understanding in. The missus only had a short list of demands for a house if we built: a studio where she can set up her art practice. She got it (at the expense of the home theatre room). The next house though may be a different story; the way I'm looking at the first time building, it's a practice run for the next (bigger) house Re: How Devious are you? 16Aug 09, 2009 11:26 am Within our floor plan, there is a study right near the front door entrance. Since we are using our rumpus room as our study, I have convinced hubby that we will use the front study as a cloak room/dressing room for all our shoes and jackets. So I will have a big classic mirror in there, a round ottoman in the centre of the room, a coat rack and a big cupboard full of shelves for my shoes Re: How Devious are you? 17Aug 09, 2009 12:18 pm My partner is building an 80 m2 detached workshop behind the house (steel frame, brick veneer, roof tiles) so pretty much a mini house. We expect it will cost us at least $70K once finished. I believe this gives me the right to make all decisions in regards to the house However, I dont want to be a b||||tch and he still gets a say. If his arguments/points are valid and he is able to make me change my mind I don't mind going his way. BUT, the kitchen and all kitchen appliences will be 100% my choice, as well as the bathroom fittings. It's only fair Re: How Devious are you? 18Aug 09, 2009 12:33 pm my partner and i have decided pretty much everything together but there was the case of having to re pick bricks and everything he wanted had red or strong organge colours and i put my foot down and said no i didn;t want red and that didnt work he still wanted it so i turned around and said fine have what you want i give up.... and guess what he turned around picked up the two bricks i said i liked and said which one would you prefer and that was it i got my brown toned bricks..... oh and now he thinks they are better than our first choice which was an inbetween colours of browny/orangy... im 100% happier with the new bricks! 2nd build here we come in Whittlesea! https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=92617 1st Build - Henley - Cooper in Doreen! Anyway, he said no I said fine let's go (not really meaning it) he pointed out a couple of others, I said no ......this one no....... this one no - he said, you're not going to agree on any others are you...and I said no.... he said to sales lady SuH wants one of those pendant lights please Looking to start the journey of becoming an owner builder in SA.
