Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 02, 2009 10:18 pm Hello there, we are under the process of colour selection. Just got one enquiry, which finish works best with off white mortar? Ironed or flush? We heard about flush will be easier for the builders, but we don't focus on value for money. We'd like to know which finish looks better. By the way, we will use the Jarrah brick and Gunmental roof tiles. All comments are welcome. Thanks a lot! Re: Need advice on mortar finish! Ironed or Flush? 2Aug 02, 2009 10:30 pm Our SS recommended that we have ironed joints, but we eventually want to part render the house so we got flush. So far we are happy with them. Re: Need advice on mortar finish! Ironed or Flush? 5Aug 03, 2009 8:37 am I originally liked flush, but I'm now going for ironed. The reasion is that with ironed, the mortar is compressed and therefore is better (no gap to brickwork, less porous, more robust). I do want to part render the house. Is that means flush joint works better than the other two when the house has the render? I would assume that it is possible no matter what joints that you have and also whether you are getting it done with your build. We are doing ours afterwards and my husband will be doing it, so I am guessing that it just might make it a little easier. Don't take my word for it though, it's just a guess Re: Need advice on mortar finish! Ironed or Flush? 8Aug 03, 2009 7:32 pm Hi, we went with the flush because we want to render later. I does make a difference. We are going to buy the dulux textured DIY rendered finish . that allows you to render the house yourself. Looks really easy too!! The more flush your mortar is to your brick, the less product you need later on. = less cost!! Plus, we have off white mortar in the flush and I luv it !!! Ironed or Flush? 9Aug 04, 2009 10:10 pm Thanks guys, so kind of you! Today checked with the gallery again, found a lable under the Jarrah brick. "Mortar Recommendation: Raked Only" Can not understand what this mean. I still think most people will choose flush or ironed. Re: Need advice on mortar finish! Ironed or Flush? 10Aug 05, 2009 7:47 am it just means that the brick company reccommend raked, as that will give the best finish to the look of the brick. That of course is their opinion. Its all up the the look you want!! Living in Caloundra Thread****** Lovin my house all finished!!! Ironed or Flush? 12Aug 06, 2009 12:26 pm Hi Jojoeyes We originally ordered flush mortar with our bricks, as I loved the flat finish. However, I just happened to arrive on site as the brickies were setting up on a Friday (totally coincidental as we don't visit the site during the week very often) and the chief Brickie was honest and said that ironed will look much better with the brick, and that like Casa2 said, it is more compressed . However he was fantastic and layed a sample of each (about five rows) to have a look at over the weekend.......and he was right, the ironed looked much much better for our brick . So we actually changed to ironed.....and we are really glad we did.....however that was with our chosen Bricks (Boral Antique Grey). They look absolutely fantastic We were really lucky we had such great brickies on the job. Good Luck Re: Need advice on mortar finish! I decide to go with ironed. Good Luck! Re: Need advice on mortar finish! Ironed or Flush? 14Aug 07, 2009 11:31 am I have to agree with Casa2 as well... We had flush mortar, and unless the mortar job is absolutely perfect, you will see the gaps, holes, etc. The raked and ironed mortar smooth out the finsh and fill the little uneven / holey spots. As for the render... If your builder is doing the render, and its only on part of your house (front), then don't choose the mortar joint type based on which is easier for render... Choose it for how it will look on your whole house! Of course if you are rendering your whole house... then everything I have said is moot. We had bad experience with our mortar, so if I was to do it again, I would not choose a flush mortar. Good luck with whatever you decide! Building with PD - Regent 23 in Point Cook WE'RE IN!!!
