Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 27, 2009 12:12 pm Ive been carefully watching all the diy insulation threads with interest as I want to do some internal insulation to cut down some of the noise on my internal walls I have a few issue's 1. The studs (up and down bits) are very random, i thought these were supposed to be consistent and the insulation is bought to match this size? Im going to need to trim every piece of insulation both in width and length, is this normal? 2. Some of the internal walls aren't very deep from one side of the wall to the other, is insulation sold in different thicknesses? How do i ensure that the insulation isn't going to be too thick if it expands and push the gyprock out or something weird like that? Im nearly at the point now where i think it might be safer to pay someone to come and do some of the select rooms for me but would prefer not too. Re: Another insulation question, with a difference 2Jul 27, 2009 6:05 pm (1) Yes, the insulation probably needs to be cut. Any significant gap will dramatically reduce the effectiveness of the sound insulation. (2) You need to buy sound insulation of the correct thickness to suit the walls. (3) You probably need to get written permission from the builder to go & do it, otherwise someone may rip it out before the plasterboard goes in. (4) Research the insulation company websites. Sounds insulating batts are considerably denser than thermal insulation batts, as they serve a very different purpose. I narrowed it down to these products for my new home: Pink 70mm R2.1 Sonobatts or Bradford 75mm Soundscreen R2.0 Batts or Insulco 75mm Acousti-Therm R2.0 Batts (perhaps only the Pink 70mm will fit in the cavities, as most cavities are 70mm, I think). Pink also make a 50mm, Bradford a 60mm, Insulco a 65mm - but the thinner batts are less effective with low frequency sounds. Re: Another insulation question, with a difference 3Jul 27, 2009 9:10 pm thanks for the info i have the okay from the builder and am hoping to see what bunnings have in the way of sound insulation some time this week i thought the insulation was sold by width not depth so that makes more sense, i have 2 different depths to cover so will measure out what i need and it should be fine crisis averted! cheers!
