Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 19, 2009 1:27 pm My house needed to have the garage cut out a bit, as the slope (which I thought was gentle) was a bit larger than at first thought. Anyway, it resulted in the need for a step or two to be built from the garage into the house. Yesterday when I went to the house they were putting down the concrete for the garage floor and had made the step. I was horrified to see how thin it was. It is only 17 cms. The builder said that he thought it was too thin, but that is what was on the plan, he supposed so that there was lots of room for the cars. I rushed home to check the plan, and once again sure enough it was correct. My foot doesn't even fit the step, never mind coming down in heels. (My foot is 24 cms!!) He said that it will only take a few tumbles before I remember to walk down sideways. I retorted that I wouldn't need the space for the cars if I can't drive because of my broken leg "learning my lesson to walk down sideways". Surely there must be some regulation on how thin the step can be???? Built the Driftwood with C*ollier Homes Moved in 8 November 2009 Slowly getting organised ..... Re: Step from house into garage 2Jul 19, 2009 5:32 pm There is a formula that stairs need to comply with to meet Australian standards (AS 1657-1992). Cant remember the exact specs, but I think the miniumum width for a tread is 240mm? Re: Step from house into garage 3Jul 19, 2009 8:06 pm waylow is correct. The minimum size for a "going" (tread) of a step is 240mm. The step will not comply and the inspector will reject it. I am glad that I hopefully have the Australian Standards on my side, and that I won't have to pay to have it made wider. Even sober I am sure we will have a few tumbles with it being so narrow!!!
