Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 18, 2009 10:44 pm Can you please help. Our builder is about to go out to our land soon to do soil tests/survey after we paid our initial deposit on a house design last weekend. I initially thought that someone had pulled out our site pegs. However, after reading on this forum that they had to have been there at settlement (only May 21) and that the pegs are actually in the ground. (I initially thought they were the pegs sticking out from the ground - very naive & new to this) Anyway, before I found all this out on the forum, I emailed two survey companies for a quote. They asked for my lot number etc to enable them to give a quote (?). They quoted $600. We didn't accept their offer as we thought we would wait for our building company to see if the pegs were still there first. I went to the property 2 days ago to find it has been all pegged. I email the company to say thanks but no thanks as I had assumed my building company had already been out. I received an email back from this company saying that they "took a punt" on us accepting the job and went ahead and did the survey anyway. They have now left it up to us whether we pay the money ($600 but they said it was discounted from $1000) or not. They have placed us in a difficult position. I feel guilty for not paying them but I didn't accept their offer to do the work. What do you think? Re: Dilemma about a site survey 2Jul 18, 2009 10:52 pm I wouldn't even consider paying them. You never asked them to do the work, therefore you don't owe them anything. I find it odd that they assumed you would want them to do the work. Blog is now up - http://www.jbdave.blogspot.com/ Re: Dilemma about a site survey 3Jul 18, 2009 10:54 pm they took a punt - tails they lose ’’Quondo Omni Flunkus Mortati ’’ If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy. As you said, you only wanted a quote...I think it's quite rude of them actually 'chelle We have a hand-over date...15/10...but I won't hold my breath! http://people-in-glass-houses.blogspot.com/ Re: Dilemma about a site survey 5Jul 18, 2009 11:05 pm Thanks. I do too - very rude and if I do say, a wee bit *******. Still, doesn't stop me feeling a tad guilty. Apart from deciding which builder to choose, this has been the only hiccup we've had yet....hope we are not in for a bumpy ride. Re: Dilemma about a site survey 6Jul 19, 2009 11:15 am You should definitely not pay them! Otherwise anybody could "take a punt" that you would like your house painted purple. And then bill you Trying this building gig one more time. Re: Dilemma about a site survey 7Jul 19, 2009 2:05 pm Hi Rowena, I understand how you feel. It's easy to say when you're not actually in that situation, but I'm with the others - don't pay them! They have no right to go on to your property without your permission. And it's not even like they're saying that they misunderstood or that you weren't clear. If they did the work by mistake then you shouldn't have to pay for their problem. And if it's something they have deliberately done to try and guilt you into giving them the work, then that's just not acceptable!! We're home!!! Re: Dilemma about a site survey 9Jul 19, 2009 2:37 pm I wouldn't pay them. You asked for a QUOTE and they gave it. That's all. It is only natural that you feel guilty, but if you are certain that you only asked for a quote then you should not worry about your guilt. It's their mistake and maybe they won't make it again. That's what happens in business if you make a mistake. So I am with the others, don't pay. They took it upon themselves to go ahead without your permission. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Dilemma about a site survey 10Jul 19, 2009 2:57 pm Rowena, I haven't had to get this work done but is $600 a good price. If the work needs to be done and the price is right I would pay if it was done properly. They may come back and pull the pegs out and you have to get it all done again. Brian Re: Dilemma about a site survey 12Jul 19, 2009 6:01 pm Thanks for all of your help. We have decided not to pay because how do we know that the pegs weren't already there to begin with but have now just been uncovered (it looked as though someone had scraped the soil back with a boot). Now we will never know whether they have actually done a full job or attended the site and just found the original pegs (which I originally thought were not there), then painted the tops white and put little above ground pegs. If I had known they were there I could have done this myself...and yes, we definitely didn't accept the quote b/c I had contacted this company and also another one. I thought it was a bit ******* that they needed our lot number & address before giving us a quote. Thanks for all of your comments. A survey must’ve completed by a certified surveyor.
