Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 18, 2009 6:24 pm Hi all, I've some queries regarding mortor/ bricks. I found several spots of mortor with a gap/ hole. http://i402.photobucket.com/albums/pp108/nottch/07_18mortor.jpg http://i402.photobucket.com/albums/pp108/nottch/07_18mortor3.jpg Is that caused by not enough mortor? Will the gaps/ holes get enlarged? May I seek your opinions? Also, bricks seem have been washed but still some residue can been seen. Also, I found some brick joint at 90' did not look very straight or neat like others Is mine again not so nice? Finally, one of the porch piers seem a bit overhang from the porch concrete, guess cos the slab this side is a bit shorter Thanks very much for your help and advice. nott Re: Mortor issue/ Brick issue? 2Jul 18, 2009 6:30 pm yes I have to get my brickwork inspected, and recommend that you do as well. Some pics if you are interested, cheers http://s677.photobucket.com/albums/vv132/zaphod373/ Re: Mortor issue/ Brick issue? 3Jul 18, 2009 7:29 pm hi, I just read ur thread. You're v systematic and organized in labelling those spots on the bricks. I also found some deviations in the mortor widths but silly as I, only mark them on the paper. Sounds at least 3 threads have similiar issues recently. Hope all can be rectified soon. Re: Mortor issue/ Brick issue? 7Jul 18, 2009 8:21 pm Yep, looks like similar dodginess that I've experienced. The quality of the mortar is obviously not great, and during cleaning several chunks have come out. You've also got to question the quality of the cleaning too, although it's not as nearly as bad as mine. http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20913 Re: Mortor issue/ Brick issue? 8Jul 18, 2009 9:19 pm Brickie, sorry for bringing confusion to u. I mean then the residue will remain on the facebrick. E.; I tried the mortar with fingernails, they don't seem v brittle and they couldn't be grabbed out. Though i know this is really laymen method. Excuse if this sounds too naive. Re: Mortor issue/ Brick issue? 10Jul 19, 2009 4:50 pm I have been a little suprised at the finish of some of the brick work in these threads. While I am sure most of it is structual sound it needs to look pretty as well. It is something you will look at every day and won't help resale value. When I visit my house again i will take a photo for everyone to show their builders. My external brickwork (inside the garage - the rest of the house is rendered) looks like it has been done by a machine or an alien it is so perfect... and they haven't even been to do the acid wash/clean thing. (All other brick work looks like a motar fight broke out after a carton or two of beer - but plaster and render is going over that) edit: I almost forgot!!! I like your bricks! the two tone and depth of color is something i didn't see when I was picking out bricks. *Built with Gemmill Homes in WA* Slab - 1st June 2009 Plate Height - 17th June 2009 Lock Up - 18th August 2009 PCI - 5th October 2009 Hand Over - 15th Oct 2009 https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20844 Re: Mortor issue/ Brick issue? 11Jul 20, 2009 7:23 am Oh dear ,I feel guilty now, complaining about * out of code brickwork, i'm so selfish. I shoud be more forgiving and considerate to the poor, underpaid trades people, and allow a below standard job. Or is it a standard job , I dont know. Lets hope an apprentice doesnt do any work that needs a quality finish, coz we all know they get even less renumeration! thanks Chippy, i hope they have applied sealer but i am doubt to be honest, so i am gonna do this job after handover. 8 16292 2 5948 |
