Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Selkirk Brick - Anyone with Moon Shadow or Blue Rain 4Jul 18, 2009 11:03 am We were also trying to decide between Moon shadow and Blue Rain, Both are gorgeous. We went with blue rain, we are using grey Blacks and white tones though out the house and felt moon shadow had a bit more browns than greys though it. We called Selkirk in our area and they gave us some properties to look at that were built using both Moon Shadow and Blue Rain, it was a great way to see actually homes built to make our decision. It maybe worth calling a Selkirk supplier in your area and they should be able to assist you with some local address's. Hope this helps and good luck https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=19655 FINALLY slab down 5th SEPT Oct 16 Bricking/ plaster starting Dec 1 Painting started END OF CONTRACT IS UP SOON HURRY UP AND FINISH MY HOME..... countdown to 27th Feb. Re: Selkirk Brick - Anyone with Moon Shadow or Blue Rain 7Jul 18, 2009 11:40 am sun In saying that.. The picture above is Blue rain apparently.. and that looks like it has a lot of brownishness.. do you think?? Is this what yours looked like with Blue Rain? True, Blue Rain does have touches of Browns in it they are both very similar I think Moon Shadow has more lighter shades throughout it, I thought it throws more of the brown than in the Blue Rain. But that's my opinion. We were also told that not all batches will be exactly the same some will be more browns some more grey's some more Blue etc. The sample we saw when picking our bricks looked quite dark with hints of brown/grey. When looking at different homes in one particular street, we saw two houses both built with Blue Rain but they looked so different we thought one was Moon Shadow and one Blue Rain but they were both Blue Rain . We fortunately loved both so what ever our batch will look like we'll still be happy We've just had our site cut waiting for slab pour so I don't have any photo's yet. Where about are you building? https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=19655 FINALLY slab down 5th SEPT Oct 16 Bricking/ plaster starting Dec 1 Painting started END OF CONTRACT IS UP SOON HURRY UP AND FINISH MY HOME..... countdown to 27th Feb. LATROBE 320 WITH DENNIS FAMILY HOMES Re: Selkirk Brick - Anyone with Moon Shadow or Blue Rain 9Jul 18, 2009 6:42 pm I chose Blue Rain, and I'm quite disappointed in the color actually, as it has a lot more brown tinge to it than I would have liked. Also, the bricks can vary substantially in colour tone, and seem fragile and prone to chipping quite easily. See my thread in relation to my brickwork issues with these bricks. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20913 Cheers, Michael Re: Selkirk Brick - Anyone with Moon Shadow or Blue Rain 10Jul 18, 2009 9:40 pm sun Is this your house? Looks Gd Is this definatley Blue Rain? Yes this is my house. Blue Rain is a really nice brick with the colour varying from greys to purples and browns however being a brick with a painted face it is quite delicate. We have had a few chips here and there but nothing major and our brick layers were very selective with which bricks they used. Also if they don't lay them the right way around you will get discoloured sections. We have been told that any chips and discoloured areas will be touched up and the end of the build. That sux for you, poor thing. What a * brick layer, i would take him to the cleaners! and my husband is a builder and said that is so wrong!! But i have to thank you, because now we will not be using this brick as we thought it was dyed, not Painted!!! What happens when they fade?? due to sun, we live where the summers get to 48 degrees. And to think in the catalogue it comes across as oxidised not painted?? And another weired thing is.... why were we going to pay an extra $1500 for them when we can get a dyed brick that won't have all those issues. Hmm... maybe i will contact Selkirk and see what they have to say about all this. snhouse - Your house looks really good, and they don't actually look painted. Re: Selkirk Brick - Anyone with Moon Shadow or Blue Rain 12Jul 19, 2009 1:42 pm Darn it.! Now what are we going to go with. I need to dind another blue/grey/brown/ brick... I love Zinc by Austral but they are too expensive to fright here $900 plus thefew grand for the bricks. We had every thing chosen and now i feel lost Re: Selkirk Brick - Anyone with Moon Shadow or Blue Rain 13Jul 20, 2009 2:31 pm Equinox I called Selkirk this morning and they said that the brickie shouldn't lay a brick that is chipped and that the brickie shaould call them and tell them that say.. 500 are chipped and they'll send 600 back. He also said that as we are a while away from melbourne that the travel distance wasn't recomended and yep they are just sprayed!!!! Crazy!! I won't be using them, he actually said. "If you feel like your not 100% on the idea of it" "then I wouldn't use them". So he didn't really sell them to me IYKWIM. Hi Sun, I to am having second thoughts on Blue Rain and have spent the afternoon at a brick suppliers getting all this info on the bricks. To cut a long story short I will still be going ahead with Blue Rain, here's a small run down on what I was told. Yes it is sprayed but then it's fired in a kiln so the colour is set into the brick, Yes it chips but so do most other bricks and your brickie will touch up the chips so they wont stick out like a sore thumb, chipping will happen weather it's a coloured brick or not. I was also shown a few other popular varieties like Vic Blue and pgh Espresso which is Greyish they too are sprayed and they have been around for years with no problems. The man said there are many companies and lots of bricks that have had the spray process and they last for years with no fading etc. He did say he would email me a durability report on Blue Rain as soon as he finds it, from his memory he said it wouldn't be any good if we lived within 1km to the ocean or if we lived in temperatures that get above 45degrees. Lucky for us the ocean is about 5km away and from memory only one scorching day last year of 44 so I feel quite happy to still go with it. I'll post that durability form if he sends it to me. Hope this info helps, It's so hard isn't it. I did a drive by today of a blue rain house it was built 07 it looked ok, but we have decided not to risk it. The rep i spoke to today didn't mention the kiln.. hmmmm??? What company are those other bricks from? I might give them a call and send through some photos and ask them to comment on the quality of the laying. In regards to the chipped bricks, the builder has replied that "the bricks throughout the home have a typical level of finish which is consistent with this brick type and those on display", so I'll be keen to see what Selkirk have to say in regards to this. What company are those other bricks from? Hi there, some other bricks he showed me were from Austral some examples were the very expensive Dynasty range which have the same process as Blue Rain. I found a link for you to see those bricks http://www.australbrick.com.au/vic/product.php?ID=9366 Also I saw Austral' elements range also painted The Man from the brick supplier also rang a rep for austral who was a little abrupt but did say to him " look if the process of painting bricks were not made to last companies wouldn't produce them" he then went on to say how many million dollar homes have been built using Dynasty Bricks and Element Bricks and he has never had a complaint. ( some people get very passionate about there products I guess We were merely asking a question ) I quite like the Hawthorne in the Austral range it was brownish with hints of gray and was not painted etc. About as expensive as Blue Rain and DH and I thought it was a great looking brick. here's a link for the colour Hawthorne http://www.australbrick.com.au/global/i ... 768529.jpg Mandy https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=19655 FINALLY slab down 5th SEPT Oct 16 Bricking/ plaster starting Dec 1 Painting started END OF CONTRACT IS UP SOON HURRY UP AND FINISH MY HOME..... countdown to 27th Feb. What the heck are we going to do, we'll have a long think about it on the weekend, DH will probably bite the bullet and go with zinc. Or we will go red brick or who bloody knows Even blue Rain.. ar the headaches aye lol..
