Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 17, 2009 12:17 am Hi everyone, This is probably a really silly question but if anyone can answer it, it's you lovely people! We only recently discovered that we have gas in our street, but not connected to our house. I called AGL the other day and they said it should be standard connection fee since there are a number of houses in our street with gas connected. However, it will take around 6 weeks to have the gas connected from the application date and the site must be clean and clear and at lock-up stage at least. Now, we can put our application in as we approach lock up and have them connect then, but given these things never happen according to a strict timetable, I'm wondering whether I should actually apply to have the gas connected now, prior to demolition? I know that sounds crazy, but... if we already have the connection, won't it be easier for the plumbers then to just connect our appliances up the gas once they are installed? If we apply for connection later and the connection happens after the installation of our gas appliances, I'm just wondering how that will work... presumably we'll have to get the plumbers back to hook them into the gas box? Any suggestions? Sorry if this is the dumbest question in the history of homeone... I can understand what you are saying though about the plumbers etc. If I were you, I think that I would be asking my builder what they think would be the best thing to do and probably the gas supplier. A Then again we have some pretty smart people on H1 so maybe someone can help you. edited for spelling errors. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: When should I get gas connected? 3Jul 19, 2009 5:21 pm lizzy stardust Hi everyone, This is probably a really silly question but if anyone can answer it, it's you lovely people! Re: When should I get gas connected? 4Jul 19, 2009 6:03 pm If you need to get the gas connected youself, try Origin Energy, they are about $200 cheaper than AGL Re: When should I get gas connected? 5Jul 19, 2009 6:46 pm We too needed to have the gas disconnected and meter removed prior to demolition. Origin were hopeless at getting this done to a particular time frame and ended up holding up the whole process. I would wait until the build begins before worrying about applying for connection. Find out from your builder approximately when lock-up is expected, and then phone AGL and let them know the approximate date you would like it done so they can have a preliminary booking made. Hope this helps. Sounds like it will be more efficient to have it connected after rather than pay for connection then disconnection (and then presumably reconnection later?). Staz88, I don't think Masterton organise the connection. They have known that we will be getting gas connected as we have it in our street and haven't said anything about organising it for us. But now that you've mentioned it, I will ask them specifically. This would really make things a lot easier as then they can organise directly with the gas company and have timing coordinated (hopefully). malibu2009, thanks so much for the suggestion of Origin Energy. I'll definitely check them out... I'll give them a call this week too and see what they say about connection timing with the build. I have found that even though they don't ask you or mention it, you have to raise the topic yourself. We would have missed out on quite a few things in our house if we had not asked for it, including sarking, which is quite important. Don't wait for THEM to ask YOU., you might just miss out. We found that we also left things and asked later (waiting for them to ask) and ended up having to back track and re do things, causing a delay in our start (which still hasn't really happened. Different builder to you.) www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: When should I get gas connected? 8Jul 20, 2009 10:09 pm themax Don't wait for THEM to ask YOU., you might just miss out. Too true, themax! My problem is I don't know what I don't know. It honestly never occurred to me to ask them to organise gas. And we didn't even think of sarking until reading about it here on the forums - we assumed it was included but it wasn't. So many other things that we're figuring out as we go. It would be great if you could have one practice build to figure out along the way all the things you really want/need. If that were the case we'd be so well prepared for our actual build! Maybe then you could compile a list and make sure what you have and havn't been given. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: When should I get gas connected? 10Jul 21, 2009 10:11 am Our gas pipes were installed yesterday, I assume they will not only do that but they will also connect it to the mains as we have a gas stove/water heater and gas BBQ point, when we demolished we had to arrange disconnection, unlike TamDaz who had a real hassle we had quite a bit of time after moving out to when demolition started. Re: When should I get gas connected? 11Jul 24, 2010 8:52 pm We too needed to have the gas disconnected and meter removed prior to demolition. And what is the process of connecting it all up again? Is any digging required? The builder has installed the gas meter, but we don't know if there are any pipes in the ground from the house to the gas point on the nature strip. We demolished and rebuilt last year, we, like you, had to get the gas DISconnected, but the builder did the rest as far as connecting it up again and making it already to go including the trenching etc. Good Luck with the build. Re: When should I get gas connected? 13Jul 25, 2010 8:11 am Thanks, vid! I am starting to realise that AGL is not the only gas provider (oh, the charms of living in ignorance ) and that some other mob might not charge as much - but it's all out in the open, still so much to investigate. So far I've learned (by pure chance) that there is another company servicing our area, Origin, who also provide gas (and electricity) - any feedback on them from anyone??? Yep, soooo ignorant But in our defence, how often does one change gas providers! My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Hello Again Lex, Our builder must have just had an arrangement with Origin because they were the ones that billed us first we had AGL before we disconnected we demolished (we lived in the old place for over 20 years) and our builder didn't give us a choice of who to go with but if we felt strongly about one or the other we can always change later, to be honest we can't be bothered because I think it's much of a muchness (maybe ignorantly) Vid Re: When should I get gas connected? 15Jul 25, 2010 4:47 pm Hahaha, probably so !!! I saw this link somewhere http://www.switchwise.com.au/ later today and it gives a very rough overview (due to different ways different suppliers calculate various discounts etc.).
