Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 15, 2009 12:21 am Hi All, Just wondering if anyone can share their advice about choosing their tiles. I am building ATM with AVJennings and have been told my tiling company is Beaumont Tiles. Well, went into beaumont tiles today and they had a TINY range, nothing at all that I wanted for floor tiles!! 1) Do you have to go with the tiling company they select or can you choose another company? If I have to go with Beaumont can I ask them to get in a different range? 2) Also wall tiles I found from Beaumont that were perfect, are in a higher range than my entitlement BUT they are on sale at a price WAY lower than my entitlement, but saleslady said that it didn't matter, I would have to pay the difference between then allowed range and the full price...... can they actually do that??? It seems to be a little unfair. 3) What kind of kitchen tiles would people recommend going with for a modern neutral kitchen, I like the mosiac tiles but told they get dirtier since they have more grout/less surface space but I really want something modern and something that goes well with dark wood (well vinyl plank white cupboards and light coloured ceasarstone. Thanks in advance!!! Vanessa. You could ask about different ranges because you might find that other Beaumonts stores have bigger ranges that they might be able to get in. You might not have any luck but it is worth asking. We went through Beaumonts and found the had a really good range but that was by going to their main store here in Adelaide. 2)Yes unfortunately they can. The retail price bears no resemblance to the price that the builder actually pays and so the deals they do on the standard ranges are so good that they pay next to nothing for them and therefore they make it quite expensive to upgrade. My advice would be to try to keep to the standard tiles for the main floor & wall tiles but then lash out abit with a feature tile that you love but because it will be over a smaller area it will not be quite so expensive for you to upgrade 3)We are having a glass mosaic tile for our kitchen that is 10cm square so it is not quite as small as some but will hopefully give a nice effect. We have got a silvery/blue sort of colour. Our tiler should be starting tomorrow so hopefully we will be seeing our splashback soon! (I'll put pictures up on our blog) Have you had your selection appointment yet or are you just going into the store and looking before selections? We went in about 3 times prior to our selections and found it abit difficult to decide what we wanted but when we actually had our selection appointment the consultant was really helpful and helped us to get the exact look we were after. I guess it makes sense that they would do deals, I just thought it was a bit insane, now I understand I guess I will go the cheaper version of the same (annoying though since I have paid the upgrade to AVJ already for floor to wall tile in the bathroom since it wasn't included!!!) I love the sound of what you are going with and would love to see the results!!! I am building in Canberra, so naturally the showrooms here are very tiny, annoying, but what can you do. I just couldn't find a colour that wouldn't either a) clash with my vanity colour or b) not look wishywashy with all white wall tiles. I guess I will have to settle for a colour I don't want I must admit though, I haven't had the appointment yet, it has been a case of bf and I have gone into the store twice and just looked for colours...... hopefully they will be better at the appointment. Weird thing, is they just lacked any form of contemporary mid colour or textured tiles (besides the usual marble effect). Will update after I have chosen colours!! Thanks a heap again!!! We took the floor tiling out of contract and put a deposit on the tiles and found a porcelain specialist that would would lay them for less than 1/2 what M was charging. M still has to tile the wet areas though..so we have to find a tile that we were happy with. The colour consultants are really helpful in your appointment and we found if you go looking in the store during the week they'll give you lots of help as they aren't as busy. I actually removed my tiles for my house except wet areas at the start and am VERY happy I did so!! I am instead going with Karndean vinyl plank everywhere except wet areas. Shame is that yep, crap selection for wet areas, will have to deal though. Must admit I have a really horrible inclination toward the stainless steel style mosaic tile for the splashback..... could be tacky but for some reason I can't look away LOL. Love the blue silver mosaic larger tile, but for $200m2?? ouch, ummm no!!!! Am hoping to make my appointment for tomorrow to avoid too many people in whilst I am making the choices and get loads of help!!! Idea of working from the centre is that you dont have a 20mm thin tile at one end and a 400mm at the other end.
