Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 11, 2009 7:49 pm Well after stalking this forum for a while, and posting infrequently, I have decided that I will start a thread to share my joys/frustrations/excitement/disappointments, and try to relieve some of the boredom experienced by family and friends who will soon be very sick of me talking about it . The plan to build has been a long one while we waited for the right time to come and we were ready to sell our house. As it turns out the right block appeared before the right time, so timeing was changed and here we are. We (hubby, 2 kids and I) have bought an acre in an estate called Teviot Downs, in New Beith south of Brisbane. Settled on June 26th. We had the house chosen long ago. It is a lovely block in a dead end street. Slight fall (about 3m over the 4000m2), and faces west which means that our big outdoor entertaining area will NOT catch the blaring QLD afternoon sun. (If anyone can tell me how to add photos I will put some up. Tried but I am a and lost my whole message so had to start again. ) We are building the Retreat by Pl@ntation with mostly cosmetic changes and the addition of a few doors. We will, however, be adding a 9m x 8m patio off the back after handover, and a 7.5 x 9m shed down the back (shed is for all our crap ). Currently we are living with my olds (legends) to save mega $$$. Have signed our NHP, soil tests done (S class slab ) but with rock . Contracts and colours booked in for August 7. Now for the difficult job of choosing colours . Am trying to go with really boring generic colours that will be timeless and suit our lifestyle. Want timber floors in living areas so any advice on products/suppliers etc would be appreciated. Anyway, keep all the great info and pics coming. Too may great threads to read. Now to keep the picture piggies happy you will need to open an account with a photo hosting site - something like photobucket etc. You save your photos there and then under the picture there should be a code for forums. Cut and copy this code into your post (the whole code in it's entirety) - then the photo will appear. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: 'Retreat'-ing to our Pl@ntation 3Jul 11, 2009 8:05 pm Good luck Seast. Will be watching your progress closesly in that we are Retreater's also up at Spring Mountain. We too looking at the timber floor route so when we get a little closer may be able to help with what we did. I am just learning too. I tried photobucket and the whole process seems so slow and then I can only either post really big photos or small thumbnails. Alternatively, in photobucket I had to go through and individually resize each photo. Seemed way to hard, when on a blog I just link it directly from my own files in any size I want. Your help will be appreciated. Alternatively, in photobucket I had to go through and individually resize each photo. Seemed way to hard, when on a blog I just link it directly from my own files in any size I want. Your help will be appreciated. Used Photobucket. Took ages to upload photos, especially because our internet here is satellite, so no where near as fast as ADSL that I'm used to. The first photo I did on its own which is why it's so big. Then I found something that gave me a few options to resize photos and I selected to upload the next 4 at once. Took a while but watched Harry Potter while I waited Will probably try for the size up from the small ones you see above. I know when looking at other's photos I sometimes find them a little small. Have thought about a blog, but am already spending way too much time on this site So don't really want to have to update a blog as well. We'll see I guess. On another note, we are going out to the block to cut most of the really lovely trees down to head height so they can be taken out. Why do developers always take out the trees at the back and leave trees right where the house will go so out of 10 trees on 4000m2 we get to keep 2!!! Charlie, Thanks for your thoughts. Re: 'Retreat'-ing to our Pl@ntation 11Jul 13, 2009 7:05 am So in an effort to feel like we are 'doing something' we decided to go and cut down a couple of the smaller trees to use as firewood where we live. Well wouldn't you know it. Took my dad who is a bit handy (though his nickname is Russel Coyte, you know, the ******* outback character), anyway, you would think that with 4000 odd m2 and fences on 3 sides, you would manage to cut them down and have them fall AWAY from the fence. But alas, tree number 2 fell 'backwards' and straight over the fence... Thankfully no fence poles were damaged and the wire can be easily nailed back into place. Needless to say, that was the end of cutting down trees. Yes, it is a nice block, we are very happy. Only 75cm cut and fill required. Building the Pl@ntation Retreat on 4009m2. All moved in!!!!!! Sadly out of about 10 trees over the acre all the nice ones were right where the house, shed and future pool will go so now we have just 2 left. Here are some pics of the blank slate. Re: 'Retreat'-ing to our Pl@ntation 14Jul 27, 2009 7:14 pm So here is what we are building. Our next difficult decisions revolve around colours. We are planning on the following (any feedback would be appreciated) Roof: Colourbond Ironstone Gutters: Colourbond Ironstone or Dune Facia: Colourbond Ironstone or Dune Main Render: Same as colourbond Dune Feature render: Similar dark colour as shown, probably same as Ironstone. We are unsure about whether to have the dark or light gutters and facia, or a combination of the two. We will have the timber look garage and a stained pivot door. Stila BK1 Build Thread The best place to talk about sport Re: 'Retreat'-ing to our Pl@ntation 16Jul 27, 2009 8:31 pm The display house had surfmist on the roof but we really want a darker bluey colour. Originally liked Deep Ocean but have moved to Ironstone. Being in the bush we have noticed houses around us with light rooves discolour and look dirty really quickly.
