Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 07, 2009 9:56 am Hi I just found this forum and can't wait to check out all the info here. We are just about to start building our house, and are wondering what is the norm about getting building quotes. We have a builder that we love who is quoting and we hope his price is good, because he is fantastic. But we have arranged another quote, and I do feel strange getting another quote because I think this builder thinks he already has the job. But we need to compare prices. What do you guys do?? Re: how many building quotes 2Jul 07, 2009 12:23 pm There is nothing wrong with getting another quote or two. Tell the builder you are getting another quote if you want. Most builders price work expecting to be pricing against someone else. It also gives you the confidence that you are paying the right amount for your build. If the preferred builder's quote ends up higher that the other amount, you could always negotiate with him. In the end it will only help you save money getting more than one quote for your home. Blog is now up - http://www.jbdave.blogspot.com/ Re: how many building quotes 3Jul 07, 2009 12:51 pm My architect is putting our plans out to tender for a measly $400 extra on his architect costs. He is going to go and meet with 5 builders and get quotes, and then he will help us choose what one to go with. You HAVE TO ask more than 1 builder, its silly not to. Just go and see what people have to offer and make sure they give you some houses they have done in the past to go lok at (no brand new ones....but older so you can see if it lasts!!). Remember the builder doesnt design the home he just builds it so you pay attention to the finishes throughout! DA approved Waiting on a few more Builder's quotes. Re: how many building quotes 4Jul 07, 2009 12:52 pm Thank you for replying. I don't want to "upset" this builder but he is really keen and experienced and we have heard all good reports about him. But we do need to compare prices and maybe have some bargaining power if need be. Thanks again. Re: how many building quotes 5Jul 07, 2009 6:13 pm If a builder gets "upset" because you're getting another quote he is probably not as good as you think. Better to find it out now than when sit with skew walls Trying this building gig one more time. Re: how many building quotes 6Jul 07, 2009 8:48 pm We told our builder he's up against 2 other quotes, and the other 2 were told the same .. so they had to be realistic in their quotes and not be trying to gain profit over the top ... They have to bid for your business .. u shouldnt throw ur hundreds of thousands of dollars just like that --- I don't have a signature - just this sentence saying that I don't have one - that'll do! Re: how many building quotes 7Jul 07, 2009 10:50 pm We are building a custom build and we took our plans to 5 different builders all up and had quotes done. The quotes we got ranged in price considerably with the difference between the highest and lowest being over $100,000! It is a major investment so you have to make sure you are getting a good price and also have a builder that you are comfortable with and understands what you want. Our custom build with Rossdale http://hazehome.blogspot.com/ https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=17630 Re: how many building quotes 8Jul 08, 2009 12:06 am woodvillesouth We are building a custom build and we took our plans to 5 different builders all up and had quotes done. We have asked 3 builders so far and the price range is 250k! Now we gotta ask a few more and see why they range sooo much. DA approved Waiting on a few more Builder's quotes. Re: how many building quotes 9Jul 08, 2009 10:23 pm We got 3 quotes 2 came in the same the 3rd was $120 000 more with similar spec's so don't fell guilty about shopping around but also with a custom build it important to find a builder you can work with and the duration of the build which can vary by months. http://take2-customdesigndownslope.blogspot.com 07-10-09 omg they have cut the block 14-05-10 we finally have the keys I would never build with Fowler homes. I built with them in 2021 and till date maintenance issues are pending.
