Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 02, 2009 9:22 pm Hi We were planning to have pipe provision put in for us (for flushing toilet) and get our own tank. Went to home building expo last week and was told that we can't have 1 tank for toilet & garden ie. due to backflush we need separate tanks. One for toilet & 1 for the garden Any one has any idea whether this is correct? I'm not planning to have 2 tanks in my small backyard Any idea anyone? cheers Re: Water tank installation/ provision 2Jul 03, 2009 10:08 am Hi there, I've never heard that, but TBH, I am not sure! We have a 5000ltr tank that is plumbed up to our toilets, laundry and outdoor taps. If we run out of tank water, it switches to mains water. Hope someone can give you a definite answer Building a Modified Lawson Modern 29 @ Botanic Ridge, Cranbourne South, Victoria Re: Water tank installation/ provision 3Jul 03, 2009 2:56 pm I haven't heard of it either! We have a 5000ltr tank that is plumbed up to our toilets, laundry and outdoor taps. If we run out of tank water, it switches to mains water. Hope someone can give you a definite answer Our builder told us that tank used for flashing toilets can't be used for watering the garden. As far as I understand this is exactly because when you run out of water it switches to mains water. And due to water restrictions you can't have water the garden from mains water. I hope someone could clarify further. Re: Water tank installation/ provision 5Jul 03, 2009 6:55 pm Hi Monichi Can only tell you what our Sunshine Coast Council in QLD says in their FAQ: 1 - All new detached class 1 dwellings (house) are required to have a rainwater tank 2 - min size is 5000 liters 3 - no Plumbing application is req if not connected to Plumbing Fixtures (PF) 4 - Plumbing approval req if connected to the following fixtures- toilet cisterns, cold water tap of the washing machine and external uses (hose taps, irrigation) 5 - there are no restrictions under the Plumbing and Drainage Act 2002 to connect other PFs, but they do not recommend the use of rainwater for human consumption, bathing, and food preparation when a reticulated system is available. So no restrictions really but it might be different in another state / council? We got this from the Plumbing Department of our Council so it might be a good idea to have a little chat with yours, just to check what everybody is telling you. Here at the coast they are really helpful. Hope this helps a little bit? Built in now city 2009, now moving to the country to embark on another build. Re: Water tank installation/ provision 8Jul 03, 2009 9:21 pm There are systems that switches to mains water without filling your tank eg Grundfos Genie, Davey Rainbank, Onga Waterswitch. So, when the tank level becomes low, the system will switch to mains water. Any water you can still get out of the tank for gardening is still 100% rainwater, so you'll still be complying to the water restriction. Downside is that these systems are expensive!!! Re: Water tank installation/ provision 9Jul 04, 2009 12:17 am Hi guys thanks for all your inputs yes our builder did mention that when the water level in the tank is low, then the main water system would kick in. I just don't understand the backflush issue. If bacteria is the problem, don't people put manure in the garden anyway? If the water level is low, then i just won't water the garden. Maybe then i could have 1 tank for toilets & garden I dunno...
