Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 27, 2009 8:35 pm Hi Does anyone have any idea what the load bearing capacity would be of a suspended timber floor with 300mm x 90mm timber joists at 450mm centres??? I'm assuming it would be "point load" capacity that I need to work out (?) Any help would be reallyyy reallyy appreciated!!! Thanks in advance, Adam Re: Load bearing capacity of timber floor joists..advice please! 2Jun 27, 2009 9:52 pm Without knowing the span it would be hard to guess. I would assume that its fairly large, that is a massive section size for a joist! What are you looking at supporting with it? Hi Waylow The span will be 5730mm...they will be holding up my master bedroom, walk-in and ensuite!! I basically need to know if there are any weight restrictions (or if i'll need to reinforce the floor) as we've bought a marble bath for the ensuite...that weighs something like 300kg...with water and a person, probably closer to 450-500kg!! Re: Load bearing capacity of timber floor joists..advice please! 6Jun 28, 2009 3:06 pm chuth77 What grade timber? F14? MGP10? LVL beam? I'm not sure to be honest One quote was based on using HJ Hybeam, but after speaking with a few people, leaning towards using solid timber instead... I can't seem to find any specs anywhere regarding load-bearing-capacity...or any way to work it out!! I'm sure it will be fine (i hope!), just a bit worried because we've already bought the bath!! Re: Load bearing capacity of timber floor joists..advice please! 8Jun 28, 2009 4:05 pm Yes 300x90 LVL will do it that's working on 300kg/m2, are you doubling up 300x45's? as I don't think 300x90 is a size in LVL. If it was me personally I would close up the spacing to 300mm over the bath area. Re: Load bearing capacity of timber floor joists..advice please! 9Jun 28, 2009 5:10 pm I would go with LVL as well. You can always reduce the center to center spacings where the bath will be, then bring it back out to 450 past the bath. If you have any doubts about the load bearing, talk to a structural engineer. Re: Load bearing capacity of timber floor joists..advice please! 10Jun 28, 2009 6:15 pm Thanks for the replies! I'll have to check with the company supplying the floor system about whether they're doubling up using LVL or not (the structural engineer specified 300x45 LVL in another area of the house) and I think the idea of reducing the centres beneath the bath area sounds like a pretty good idea, just to be safe!
