Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 23, 2009 9:22 pm We are building with M3tricon and have found a huge expansion joint in the middle of our facade. It really looks ugly. We know technically its good so that the facade does not crack and they will probably fill it with silicone later. But it looks hideous. And so far we haven't seen any facade with such a big expansion joint in the middle. Do you think its acceptable? Re: Is the expansion joint in middle of the facade acceptable 3Jun 23, 2009 9:30 pm Trying to attach pic. But for some reason its not working. We follow the whole process of choosing file name and then uploading it. It starts uploading but then nothing appears in the end. Plz Help. Does the plan show the expansion joint there? If so your stuck with it, Ive moved CJ in the past to try to make the facade look better only to be told to go back and put it where it shows on the plan, so most brickies put them exactly where the plan says... Re: Is the expansion joint in middle of the facade acceptable 10Jun 24, 2009 2:46 pm We have two right in the front of our facade too. They havent filled them with an anything yet and they look hideous. When they fill the joints with the silicon stuff , i thought you then werent able to notice them?? is this not the case?? But then again one would need to see the full front elevation. we have two in the front as they need to be every six metres. Plus we are on clay soil so we def had to have them. Re: Is the expansion joint in middle of the facade acceptable 14Jun 24, 2009 3:14 pm Firstly, we cant see any expansion joints in our plans. Today SS called us and he said he will show us the engg. plan where they have expansion joints in the drawing. Secondly, I think they fill it with silicon though i havent confirmed with my SS yet. And even if you will fill it with silicone, i guess you still would be able to see the silicone line going through the facade. I will be seeing him this Friday and will ask all these questions. Finally, the width seems to be not more than 10 mm and also the gap between the expansion joints seems to be less than 3 metres. Re: Is the expansion joint in middle of the facade acceptable 15Jun 24, 2009 3:18 pm Yeah are you on clay soil??? Depending on your soil report would decide how many and where you need them three meteres apart is pretty close huh?. They will prob show on plans as AJ or EJ. I guess when we will see the SS, we will ask him a copy of the plan that he has got and will copy it here. Re: Is the expansion joint in middle of the facade acceptable 17Jun 24, 2009 3:32 pm In our construction drawings, we have one sheet that specifically shows where the expansion joints will be. It also has a note: Joint to be 10mm MAX. and 8mm MIN. Check the drawings when they show them to you and then see if they are within their tolerances. I thinkk you'll find they'll look ok once they are filled. Everyone has them. Usually the builders render where they are noticeable on the displays to hide them. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Im worried all the water will get inside the brick cavity Living in Caloundra Thread****** Lovin my house all finished!!! SS told us today that bricks have been washed already which is crap. I am attaching few more pics for you guys to judge if its washed or not. Even though the brickies did a great job. I have also got the same issue what if brickies wash it now and the silicone stuff is not even in. Look, we will be asking our SS this friday and then will clear it up with you guys about how it works. http://img189.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=dsc02875m.jpg MICHELLE: How to copy the image directly in the reply. I followed your blog regarding clicking IMG box but it just does not work. Plz help Re: Is the expansion joint in middle of the facade acceptable 20Jun 24, 2009 4:38 pm Andrei looking at the photos they do apear to be where thay need to be, but to give you peace of mind find a display home with that facade and asses it from there. once the corking hapens it wont be so visable. To my understanding early saw cuts are to control shrinkage cracks, so doing them now would be pointless. Control joints may reduce ugly cracking during periods of soil… 3 9863 Hi all I need a guidance on how far I need to space expansion joints in the concrete driveway and its type (keyway/foam.)
