Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Broadband in South Morang, Hawkstowe? 21Jun 24, 2009 2:19 pm What's the best way to secure an ADSL port in a new estate? Should we apply for a phone line as soon as the house is built and then apply for ADSL straight away after it's installed? As you would know University Hill is cabled by Opticomm who wholesale to Internode (and Adam?) regardless, their retail pricing for 25Mbit over fibre is from memory the same as their ADSL2 own DSLAM offerings - ie fairly reasonable... At half the price it's a bit of an embarrassment to Telstra Velocity so called 'smart communities'. Maybe I'm out of touch with the average person, but surely when buying land an informed party would jump at the opportunity to get guaranteed 100Mbit over fibre at a reasonable retail price? I would think in 2009, most with the knowledge of what they were getting would not have a problem paying up to $3-4k extra (the approx cost if every house is cabled with fibre, possibly less since all greenfield developments post 2005 in the City of Whittlesea to have empty fibre ducts installed anyway at the developer's cost). @btherl, yes it's effectively a race to see who can get their application in to get a free ADSL port. If you miss out just keep re-applying every time you're rejected for as long as it takes...suppose I am lucky, only took me 4 applications and 7 weeks currently in South Morang to get a 1.5Mbit Bigpond ADSL connection. As previously mentioned I know of people who were less fortunate and had to apply (and wait for rejection) in excess of 50 times to finally get a connection. @lisanne, apologies as you are most likely correct. If you're in Mernda Villages for example you probably won't be pair gained as it would be pointless not to use copper pairs all the way given the estate's distance to the exchange is probably a few hundred meters? Good news for those in Mernda Villages anyway... Re: Broadband in South Morang, Hawkstowe? 23Jul 25, 2009 4:54 pm Why does Virgin broadband package come with coax cable and splitter? I've recently made contract with virgin for cable broadband and the package arrived just the other day. I followed the instructions but can't connect to the internet. The package also had 3 sets of coax cables and a splitter. I don't know what these have to do with broadband.
