Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 17, 2009 9:53 pm Probably a question for ed @ EcoClassic but will put it out on open forum. Have moved in to new place. Decided to do 5 windows as double glaze to stop noise. . Will look at putting in laminate around all windows and front panel of double glaze. Couple of things 1) Window maker has stated that Veridien Hush Laminate Glass 6.5 will do the job. But we have really noisy country road with trucks going down to quarry. Husband thinks we need to do Hush glass 12 all around but with the price this is going to cost a fortune. Question is 6.5 enough? 2) Window maker says cannot reuse glass in double glaze to act as the second panel as in needs to be resealed? 3) Window maker also says if we remove all the glass then they wont buy it back as it is classed as second hand glass. Can we sell this somewhere? We will have 28 metres. 4) Is $8k and realistic price to reglaze this amout of windows and 3 sliding doors in total 28 metres. His first price was $9.3 and I nearly fell off my chair. I am still feeling this is way too high. And finally, now that we have built and moved in, what type of insulation in the walls can we do and how much roughly does it cost? Can we do a blow in foam? And are the electrics and points going to be a problem. Who does this type of work as I am struggling to find a Melbourne based company on the web. we are selling and moving to the coast, if you know someone who wishes to buy in Mernda Villages, please visit this link http://www.realestate.com.au/property-h ... -107083288 Re: Road noise problem need advice - laminate glass & insulation 2Jun 20, 2009 9:15 pm Is the sound coming in through the windows, the ceiling, the walls or the ground? Some window manufacturers' websites give ratings for how much sound the various glass and style of window will be reduced, however from what i've seen they are far too general. It is probably the low frequency truck noises that are the most worrying for you. I built an office on a main road and was advised by my builder to use fixed 10mm glass instead of double glazing. We was right. Low frequency noises are the most difficult to stop. Very thick glass is the only type that will significantly reduce them. On the other hand, perhaps more is coming through the ceiling than you would expect (especially if you have a colorbond roof). If so, try Bradford 88mm SoundScreen R2.5 Batts 40kg/m3 (preferred) or Pink 100mm R3.0 Sonobatts 32kg/m3 or Pink 90mm R2.7 Sonobatts 32kg/m3. Normal insulation batts are only about 11kg/m3. Again, thicker and heavier is better. An alternative may be constructing a substantial wall between you and the road. If double glazing didn't do the job, I don't really think changing the glass to laminated will... the main sound stopping properties come from the total thickness of glass and the air tightness of the window. Air infiltration could be a major problem letting the noise through. Check your gaps around opening sashes etc. It's just not worth trying to recycle the glass. If this price is just to reglaze it seems expensive but I would think the windows may even need to be changed to suit double glazing, it depends whether the windows will accept double glazed units. Is your 28m linear metres or m2? One solution which would improve your windows is to have a second window installed inside you existing windows. This would give the best result. Did you make it clear to the builder in writing that you needed to control the noise? If you built with JGK, then they also made the windows, they own Project Windows. Regarding insulating the walls. This is particularly difficult now - blow in foam won't work as it could cause dampness in your home. The cavity in brick veneer homes needs air flow. The only viable solution would be to fit another layer of plaster board on top of what you have (you could look at doing the ceilings too) - but I think that will be expensive. Wondering... It's possible that your window supplier is offering laminated as they can't fit double glazing into the windows that you have. What sort of windows are they - sliding, awning? The best & cheapest option was to put a 13mm fire-rated plasterboard over the top. The thicker board will be better for low frequencies, as will the fire-rated variety (denser than normal plasterboard) - and the fire-rated is virtually as effective as the specific sound-reducing variety. However, according to a document from Boral about their plasterboard and external brick veneer wall that is upgraded by 13mm of sound-reducing plasterboard will reduce overall sound levels (not necessarily low frequencies) by about 5db. To put that in perspective, 10db is the equivalent of halving the sound level. So 5db will probably not be worth it, especially if it has less effect on low frequencies. Re: Road noise problem need advice - laminate glass & insulation 7Jun 21, 2009 4:03 pm I read this as you already have double glazed windows? If I am correct, I would get them remade with 6.5 v-lam both sides. I have replaced 4mm float with v-lam in the past, on a house under the Sydney flight path. The noise level went from loud and obtrusive to almost un noticed. Do you have a colorbond roof, or what? Where is the sound really seeping in? Re: Road noise problem need advice - laminate glass & insulation 9Jun 25, 2009 9:03 pm Hi everyone and thanks for all the replies. Sorry I havent responded earlier but with the move and everything I have hardly had time to stop and think about my reply. We have done alot of research on this. Rather than reply to all aspects I will try and address your comments below. We didnt put our request in writing to JG King when we ordered our double glaze windows. Fortunately because we did a wrap around two rooms it's obvious we did this because of the potential noise and not the elements. My first call was to Project Windows, who we know are owned by our builder to get quotes so I knew what the potential issue was to be and our worst case scenario. And I got alot of advice from both glass manufacturers and other window companies. We have found that the true insulation in a double glaze for noise is the type of glass and the space between the two panes. So we are trialing at cost the 6.5 hush laminate in the double glaze in the bedroom windows. We also will consider acoustic plaster on the walls if this doesnt fix the issue and some better batts in the roof. Our side fence is in now and this seems to have helped by about 30% in the other rooms except the loungeroom where we will put the hush into the existing double glazed windows. We are aware that we cannot make our other windows double glaze unless we totally redo the frames. But we think the hush laminate all over should do the trick in the standard windows as well as the sliding doors. We had looked at the possibility of putting a city height fence around the total front of the house but the council have some severe regs on height so planting will have to do here. And finally, we had already ordered upvc shutters from Hunter and Douglas so we know these add extra sound barriers, so in all we should be ok. Our builder has been great. Natalie King has taken on our cause and been a great champion to resolve this problem. Will keep you posted as to how we go, as the windows in the bedroom are being fitted next week.
