Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Sooty's house - Commodore Homes, Perth WA 41Jun 22, 2009 9:47 pm Thanks for the photos Sooty. The bathroom looks terrific. I quite like the one stripe. Our white tiles are 20X30cm and I think they are going vertical so we might have to see how I can work a bit of tile and the border under the mirror. I think I will standing over the tilers shoulder when he does the bathrooms and I will keep changing my mind. The border tile is the only one I don't have a sample and it's my favourite. Hope you are not too far off from moving in. R Re: Sooty's house - Commodore Homes, Perth WA 42Jun 22, 2009 10:34 pm I met with the tiler onsite also and spent a considerable amount of time deciding the placement. We had a slight problem with our tiles. They are sold as 200mm x 200mm but in fact one tile (I think the floor tile) is out by about 2mm, so it was 200mm x 198mm and those measly two millimetres caused all this trouble! It was very annoying because nobody knew this until it was time to lay the tiles and then they found out about the size difference. I know to some people a difference of 2mm is probably just so inconsequential, but it really caused some problems with the tiling, and we were all there with the tiler and the SS. Sooty's House - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=19462 Re: Sooty's house - Commodore Homes, Perth WA 43Jun 25, 2009 4:39 pm I can totally understand about the 2mm difference. I am a patchwork sewer and know that 2mm on each peice can make a whole lot of difference. How did you fix the problem, just in case it happens to us. Our floor tiles are 200 x 200mm. R Re: Sooty's house - Commodore Homes, Perth WA 44Jun 25, 2009 5:04 pm The problem it was causing was that the grouting would not match up, as in the lines wouldn't match up. The option was to cut down the larger piece, however, this would cause a problem because as the tiling progressed it would get smaller and smaller and not look that attractive. Or the other option was to not try to match up the grouting. We went for the second option. I didn't like the idea of cutting down the tile because it would cause a lot of sharp edges. I don't think most people will notice that the grout doesn't match up. You can see it here, look at where the wall tiles meet the floor tiles. They aren't white white, nor ivory. More of a cream but not really that yellow. It's actually quite a light colour even though it looks quite yellow in the photo. It's called Alabaster. I would say in real life it's more to the lighter end of this photo. Because they are different colours it just adds to it. Now you have me thinking, should I or should not match the grouting on the tiles. I remember at the tile shop the lady showing us all of the grades of white through to cream. R Re: Sooty's house - Commodore Homes, Perth WA 48Jun 25, 2009 9:20 pm Hi Sooty, I actually like how the tiles look in this picture. I never would have picked that it didn't look right. But maybe cause I'm not up to that stage yet I think I will have the same problem. Some of my tiles are 200x200 and some are 198x198. I didn't even think about it as a potential problem. My grout will match my tiles though, so it won't be that noticeable. It would be nice to have been told that when I chose my tiles though My tac-home-ter: Been in 8 months! When we bought the tiles, the store told us they were 200mm x 200mm. The tile selection form says 200mm x 200mm. Only when the tiles came did anyone find out. Oh and I should clarify, when I said the grout didn't match, what I meant was the lines of grouting wouldn't match up. I'm not sure if you guys thought I meant the grout colour or the actual grouting? If any case, I did pick two different grout colours. The darker tiles have a dark grout, the lighter tiles have a light grout. Quote: Hi Sooty, its funny I didn't notice that the grout didn't match. Sooty's House - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=19462 Re: Sooty's house - Commodore Homes, Perth WA 52Jun 26, 2009 8:06 am we had the exact same issue with our floor and wall tiles in the ensuite. 198 x 198 and the others were 200 x 200. tiler said there wasn't anything he could really do and that he didn't want to make the grouting any wider etc to try and line up the tiles as this wasn't advisable for a wet area. It looks fine though. we also have the tiles in our shower section on a diagonal to improve the water fall towards the drain so really it's not that obvious. Re: Sooty's house - Commodore Homes, Perth WA 53Jun 26, 2009 11:01 am I didn't ask about widening the grout, but I wouldn't have wanted that. It's wide enough as it is! Why make tiles that are 198x198, 199x199 and 200x200 You would think that they would standardise the size!!! What has your builder suggested you do about it? I got my tiles through Crosby and the tiles were all marked 200 x 200. She even wrote that on our selection form. I don't really care if they make different sized tiles, but what they need to do is actually specify the REAL size and not just round up because they think it doesn't matter or that 2mm is not going to make a difference. I've been moving stuff into the house over the weekend. Next weekend I am having a garage sale at my house. I'm not sure when my brother is planning to move into the house, probably sooner than me though. I'm going to stay here until mid July because that's when the Foxtel and internet have been scheduled to be disconnected. This is pretty big and the initial concern was that there would be a dividing seam through the bench because the builders were worried that Formica wouldn't have a sheet that was large enough to make the counter top without a seam. I wish they would have told us this at the selection place (Crosby). I think we will now wait and maybe try and talk to the tiler. Re: Sooty's house - Commodore Homes, Perth WA 58Jun 29, 2009 2:31 pm Not having the tiles line up isn't a huge deal, like you said, you can't notice it. Or am I missing something? Yes there are cupboards on both sides. But there is a partition between the front and back, so you can't reach through from one end to the other.
