Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 14, 2009 5:53 pm Hi, I've just joinbed this forum as we have had an offer accepted on a block and are starting to consider our choice of builder. So far we are considering custom design by Highbury Homes or Platinum Homes, Big Ben Builders - we have had meetings with sales consultants for the first two - big Ben was in swine flu quarentine! Does anyone have any information good or bad on these builders? Thanks! MAG Re: Perth builders - inside story please 2Jun 28, 2009 11:44 am Mag, I built with Highbury Homes, my original review is below. After 18 months, the house has been under almost constant repair (cracked cornices, sumps collasping, incorrect site works, sewer pipes in the wrong location, water pipes in the wrong location, replacement of electrical components, repair of ceilings. Highbury Homes has essentially been unable or unwilling to fix anything correctly, except the sump which was built by NLG. I will be taking Highbury Homes to the Builder's Registration Board on someof the outstanding issues. My neighbour also built with Highbury Homes, he presently has water coming from electrical receptacles during heavy rains. In a properly built double brick constructed house, water will never get to the inside quick brick, it should drain via the cavity between the two brick walls. Note that Highbury Homes did pay me for some of the contractual breaches. My review: I have recently built with Highbury Homes and found them to be completely unsatisfactory for a number of reasons. The most problematic aspect of Highbury Homes is they consistently failed to honour the terms of the contract, and are now overdue in time. They are essentially a middle or the road medium size builder, that appears to have taken on too many new projects. Issues for example included: they literally had to do almost everything twice: retaining wall trench put in wrong place (and tried to charge me for it), roof alignment incorrect, screwed up site works, a sewer pipe now runs in main bedroom roof space, brickwork on my workshop was first 28 c then 25 c then 28 c, installed plastic pipe instead of copper, kitchen was installed as antique white vinyl using Polytech, was supposed to be new antique white using Laminex - 8 week delay while they redid it, laundry room shower was to be frameless, put in semi-frameless, now replacing with frameless, Installed the wrong range hood, ordered the wrong oven; initially installed the wrong gutters; they allowed concrete to spill on to the lower floor face brick; all the windows are loose in the walls - frame heads were never fixed (presently being fixed); most of the Jason windows have leaked over winter due to rain (trying to fix this as well); recommended Classical Stone for granite benchtop - they cut it wrong, redid it three times. The Managing Director of Highbury Homes told me to get in my car an f**k off when I visited their offices to complain about contract breaches and the mendacity of the site supervisor (also a company director).
