Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 12, 2009 9:25 am Hi All, Not sure if this is the right forum to post this question in so moderators feel free to move it as you see fit! I'm brick shopping for my new house at the moment and I'd like a darker, preferably brown coloured brick and I prefer bricks with a smoother look. Just wondering if anyone has used the Cassica from PGH and if they have some photos of their house they would like to share? I can select from most of the NSW PGH ranges except the smooth faced ranges so if anyone has any other suggestions feel free to make them! Not sure if it was a Boral display centre: http://www.boral.com.au/product_index/b ... site=boral or it might have been at Austral http://www.australbrick.com.au/vic/product.php?ID=10711 Re: PGH Cassica Bricks 3Jun 13, 2009 11:41 am Hi mjt084, we have chosen Cassica bricks for our house but we haven't started the build yet. We contacted PGH and got a list of addresses close to us that we could go and look at houses that had been built in a few of the different PGH colours that we liked and cassica def stood out to us! Lisa- Finally in our house!!! Re: PGH Cassica Bricks 4Jun 14, 2009 8:26 pm Thanks for the posts Zjasm and lj3376, Unfortunately my builder only uses PGH Bricks, I've seen a few really nice Boral smooth face bricks but I can't use them . PGH has a large range or smooth face bricks as well but they arent within the standard allowable range and would cost a few thousand dollars to upgrade. What colour mortar are you using with the Cassica lj3376? I'm going to chase up the addresses in the area here from PGH but from previous experience very few people use dark bricks so there aren't many to look at if any! Id post some pics as to why but the forum wont let it happen. Spend a little more and get a proper brick. We are probably going to use a darkish mortar. Not sure on roof colour yet, we are going colourbond. PGH had a few nice dark bricks we liked, but as per one of my other posts they have changed the look of them, hence why we are going with the cassica. Good luck in finding a house nearby, if you need piccies of the ones in my area let me know ! Lisa- Finally in our house!!! You can't put that statement out there without clarifying it Brickie, I would appreciate it if you could contact me through a private message and let me know what problems you're talking about. I'm sure the other people who have posted to say they're using PGH would also appreciate it. The bricks come stacked on a pallet all the wrong way from a bricklayers point of view, so it costs a lot more time and effort to move the bricks. ALL the pallets have cracked, chipped and broken bricks on them, not some pallets, but all. I spend more time actually looking at the bricks than laying them. I just finished a job recently and it took me twice as long to lay the bricks on the house as it would have if the builder had of got some real bricks, the house took me 4 weeks, I normally do a house in 2 weeks. The bricks in the pictures are for a job for one of the sales reps for PGH, if that is the best they can do for one of their own then they have real problems. I told the builder that if he ever gets those brand of bricks again I aint laying them, or I will charge him double to do so. I had to caress and nurture each and every last brick into place for fear of it falling apart just by picking it up. I felt like a museum curator handling a fragile artifact having to be so gentle. The bricks cant be cut with a hammer and bolster like real bricks as they just shatter into a mazillion pieces. I have no issues with PGH, I just wouldnt for the life of me use them on my house. http://www.brickwork.net.au/images/DSCN0932Small.jpg http://www.brickwork.net.au/images/DSCN0934Small.jpg http://www.brickwork.net.au/images/DSCN0933Small.jpg http://www.brickwork.net.au/images/DSCN0935Small.jpg Re: PGH Cassica Bricks 12Jun 15, 2009 7:42 pm Thanks for the pictures and the insights Brickie! I'd be pretty dissapointed if that pallet showed up to go onto my house and even more dissapointed if I was the brickie having to work with them! I notice you're from Whittlesea, do you know if the PGH bricks in New South Wales would come from a different factory? Has anyone had any similar problems with NSW PGH bricks? Cheers All PGH bricks here are from Sydney. Re: PGH Cassica Bricks 15Jun 15, 2009 8:04 pm Brickie, What are your thoughts on the other two big supplier (at least in Sydney); Boral and Austral? Also, are there certain types of bricks that are more difficult to lay, more prone to defects or give problems in the long run. I types I can think of are dry pressed, extruded smooth face, extruded plain and sandstock (yuk, why do people use this one!). I'm sure there are other types. Re: PGH Cassica Bricks 17Jun 15, 2009 9:12 pm Well I must be one of the lucky ones then. Because I am building with the same builder as mjt084 and am having PGH bricks on my home. We are about 70% bricked at this stage and the bricks are gorgeous - haven't seen many at all thrown on the scrap and my brickies onsite are extremely hard working and conscientious. My brickwork is looking like a dream. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: PGH Cassica Bricks 18Jun 15, 2009 9:22 pm Thanks Kyton, You've given me some confidence back in the product! How have you found Capital to build with so far? Our brickwork is finished now except for some of the sills, and they're saying there might not be enough left to finish the job. No wonder when you see how many broken bits there are ****** around! And when they were first delivered, we noticed that there were lots of broken ones on the pallettes, so they do have a problem. I'll speak to the brickie when I get a chance and see if he feels the same way as you do. I just hope this doesn't mean our house isn't as strong as it should be - it's not going to fall down is it? Re: PGH Cassica Bricks 20Jun 16, 2009 11:19 am Laine it's not going to fall down is it? Probably not. I did a job years ago with PGH and at the end of the job we had over 1000 bricks that were just crumbly pieces on the pallets, Ive never seen so much waste. 0 1750 DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair to do it properly you need to dig out the garden and waterproof the outside of the wall.
