Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 10, 2009 5:20 pm Sorry, I need to vent. We signed up and put a deposit down with AVJennings for our 'dream home', almost 2 years ago. They took over 1 year to START building, when we were told at the time we'd be moved in within 9 months of signing up. They then took 10.5 months on top of that, to build it. We settled almst 3 weeks ago, however they still haven't been organised enough to get our occupancy permit done (they have to fix a bathroom door before we can get the permit, but 3 weeks on & nothing has happened about it). Plus there's quite a few problems that need fixing. I know they hire local contracters to do the work for them, so it's pretty much pot-luck what kind of a job is done...but the plaster job is so bad that the paint in cracking along the joins across ceilings and walls. We were so desperate to get in at the time, we didn't notice....and now I so wish we didn't pay up when we did. Our dream home has turned into an absolute nightmare!... Re: Do Not Build with AVJennings!!! 2Jun 10, 2009 5:32 pm OMG - I am really sorry - I honestly don't know how you cope with this sort of scenario - are they offering any compensation???? Re: Do Not Build with AVJennings!!! 3Jun 10, 2009 6:17 pm Oh you poor buggers, this is horrific, I wish you all the best with the fight you have ahead of you and hope you get all the compensation you deserve. Re: Do Not Build with AVJennings!!! 4Jun 10, 2009 6:20 pm What has happened to you is pure crap and should not happen. Good on you for speaking up and letting people know what this company is like. I hope things are all good for you from here on in. JL Re: Do Not Build with AVJennings!!! 5Jun 10, 2009 7:02 pm I am really sorry to hear about all of your trouble with this builder. I am currently building with them and have had my fair share of issues, but to be honest with many emails and phone calls and actually visiting head office, yes it is al ot of time wasting that should not happen on my behalf, but things have been rectified. I do hope that all this gets sorted for you. If you don't mind which house are you building? Re: Do Not Build with AVJennings!!! 6Jun 10, 2009 8:12 pm Gee that sounds dreadful. I hope you can get some sort of compensation from them if it's not too late. Blog : http://ournewhaven.blogspot.com/ (Modified Newhaven - Homestead Homes) Status : DA - Dec 09. Slabbed - Jan 10. Handover - Aug 10 Re: Do Not Build with AVJennings!!! 7Jun 10, 2009 11:30 pm Thanks for your support guys! They pay compensation ($250) for each week they go overtime. However the countdown (9 months) only starts when they actually START the building, so no compensation for the year of waiting beforehand. We're entitiled to 6 weeks compensation cause they went over the 9 mths of building time, but that's it. We chose the Mentone Tillie. Re: Do Not Build with AVJennings!!! 8Jun 10, 2009 11:44 pm well I'm sorry to hear of this, I can't imagine how I would go if I were you. As tillie said, you really need to go there in person. You need to make yourself very clear that this is not acceptable. You also need to go as high as possible in the company and if I were you, tell everyone on the way up your situation (from beg to end) and really dig your heels in. If the last person you complain to says they will get back to you - find out exactly what they are going to do, who they are going to discuss the matter with and who their superior is. If nothing is done within 24hrs to your satisfaction - go to their superior and so on and so on. I believe (although others may have opinions) the reason big companies (builders) do this to us people is because they can. Yes, it's that simple. You need to make it clear to them, in no uncertain terms, that they cannot do this any longer. And lift your argument for compensation along by drawing attention to the 12mths prior to the build start date as grounds to seek further compensation at VCAT. Don't mince your words! I built with AVJ last year.. and they took nearly 10 months to start and we went thru lot of drama as well. although they built within the contract time,, and the quality of build was good,, cant complain, Once they started to build, it was quite quick and no major dramas... but the SS was such a pain. Customer service was appalling..... I will not build with them again or recommend them to any one. i hope things get sorted out for u. Re: Do Not Build with AVJennings!!! 10Jun 11, 2009 8:34 pm You would think that I live in the bush or something the way everything has taken so long, but i'm practically walking distance from their head office. Today must have been a slow day, because they've actually been on the ball!... I nearly fell over from shock! Perhaps they've seen this thread...LOL Re: Do Not Build with AVJennings!!! 11Jun 11, 2009 8:52 pm I am sorry to hear your situation. Its good that you let people know how bad situation can be if we decide to build with this company. Thats good if they see this thread and actually speed up the process! Thanks for sharing with us.
