Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 11, 2007 11:24 am I went through many display homes and found out most 1st floor have some hardiplank instead of brick, particularly at back of the building.
The hardiplank may be the cheaper solution, but how long it can last, and how easy to maintain?. I already see moisture, rotting of hardiplank in some new display home( less than 6 years old). It does not looking good as well. Does any concern having hardiplank on the new double-story home?. Thanks Eddy Re: what is pros and cons of hardiplank on the new double-story 2Sep 11, 2007 11:28 am You can ask to have it replaced with brick, for extra $$$ of course. Re: what is pros and cons of hardiplank on the new double-story 3Sep 11, 2007 12:42 pm Brick can only be placed on brick....
ie if the back wall of the house on both storiea does not line up then the upper will be something other than brick. Hope it makes sense. Well the display home did. I asked for brick. So they laid a steel beam across the rear of the house and did it in brick.
Like I said, it can be done.. it'll just cost extra $$$. Re: what is pros and cons of hardiplank on the new double-story 5Sep 11, 2007 1:11 pm Mark,
apologies I misunderstood your answer. It can be done! I forgot to read it obviously.... What sort of extra $$$ are we talking in your case? Re: what is pros and cons of hardiplank on the new double-story 8Sep 11, 2007 5:10 pm Think about the work involved.
Extra beam to support weight. Extra reinforcement to hold up beam. Extra scaffold to get to area that needs bricking. Extra bricks/mortar. Extra time for brickies. Versus Sheets of hardiplank can probably be hung in half a day by 2 blokes. Slap some paint on afterwards. Re: what is pros and cons of hardiplank on the new double-story 9Sep 11, 2007 5:17 pm Mine cost 3k for the entire rear of the upper story.. about 15 metres across.
This was back in 1999. Re: what is pros and cons of hardiplank on the new double-story 10Sep 11, 2007 8:45 pm [quote="Al"]Think about the work involved.

It is cost saving for hadriplank. But for a long run, the hardiplank need to maintain regularly, and may not last long. Re: what is pros and cons of hardiplank on the new double-story 11Sep 11, 2007 11:07 pm I'd go the extra cost of brick .
The 2nd floor extension that was done on my place in the 90's is hardiplank and frankly - it looks F%$#@ ugly. Plain flat boring painted surfaces - and 13 years on the paint is fine - but man is it ugly and looks just like it is - a hardiplank bit plonked on top of a briock house and it is totally out of place.!!! I'm currently working on ways of improving it, with colourbond corrugated iron being one of them. Don't go the hardiplank option it is cheap and it looks cheap. !! Steve Unless you cant see it and you don't plan on being in the house for a long time... in which case go ahead. Otherwise find one which don't have the hardiplank, and make some internal modification, in this way it may be cheaper.
However, there are not many builder build 100% brick home now. When you drive along the new ester, you will find many new home with hardiplank. Re: what is pros and cons of hardiplank on the new double-story 14Sep 12, 2007 9:56 am You have other options too:
