Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 01, 2009 5:24 pm G'day all, Does anyone have any experience in self installing insulation wrap to the outer frame and then butting insulation batts into the walls? I have read a couple of topics about this on the site (which has led to me wanting to do this in the first place!) and wanting to get a clearer picture on quantity of materials, approximate costs and a realistic time frame to complete. My build should have kicked off this morning (yay!) and I sprung this idea on our site manager when my wife and I met with him last week. I have done some measurements of the house and have come up with the following: Total length of external walls (minus the garage) = 63m - Should you put foil wrap on the inside of the garage walls? Total length of internal walls = 46.5m Ceiling height 2.55m (8.5 foot) Total area = 63+46.5= 109.5m x 2.55m = 280m2 Wall wrap is 1350mm x 60m , so total coverage from a roll is 81m2. Two rolls should be enough? R1.5 wall batts 1160mm x 430mm per batt and usually 16 batts per pack, giving coverage of about 9 m2. Therefore it seems I am going to need about 31 packs. Does this seem like a reasonable quantity or am I over/under estimating the number required? Help? Leon Re: Wall insulation for new build 2Jun 01, 2009 6:51 pm I'm not sure what sort of quantities you would need, but if you take your measurements to somewhere like Bradford they will guide you on the quantities required. The builder did our foil wrap and external insulation and it was done around the internal walls of the garage (to protect the house) but not the external garage walls, although the foil wrap went all the way round. We added a few wall batts inside the house aswell (with the SS permission). It's very easy to do, just make sure you wear gloves and a mask or it gets very itchy! Some people use tape to hold it on but we found string to be more effective as the tape peeled off. Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new. Re: Wall insulation for new build 3Jun 01, 2009 9:10 pm Pardon my ignorance, but I thought any additions of Batts etc when construction has started means a Post contract variation - or can you just ask to do it yourself? He said yes they need to go in once the first electrical fit was done. We kept an eye on the build and when it got to that stage gave him a call and he was fine with it. Re: Wall insulation for new build 5Jun 01, 2009 10:02 pm Thanks BP - we tried to stick to the standard as much as we could for costs reasons and didnt think much of putting in wall batts as Brisbane winter is mild. But thinking again about it if we did get a chance to put some in ourselves, we probably would.. must check with SS when we meet him.. I am receiveing differing info on what size is required. Did you find that you needed the string to hold them in or did you just do it to be safe. I thought that they should stay in the studs with friction alone. Backpocket, did you put those soundscreen batts into all your internal walls or just media room, bedrooms? I guess I am trying to find out how much insulation I am going to need to keep things cooler and also to keep noise down as I am intending to install engineered floating timber floors as well. Cheers, Leon I just asked DH what size batts they were and he couldn't remember but they were as thick as the wall joists. DH just bought them from Bunnings. We used string on a few tricky spots where they were a bit loose. One day the bi-fold doors were opened fully for the plaster to be delivered and half of our batts fell out so DH had to go back that night with a torch and put them back. He used string on those ones incase the same thing happened again. I'm planning to install the insulation myself and I was told that the fibreglass batts tend to sag after a while and to use a few spots of building glue on the studs/noggs to prevent that.
