Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 27, 2009 9:50 pm Hi there, I was wondering whether anyone is using Evergreen Roof Tiles from Boral and can give me their opinion. We've chosen Sydney Town bricks, also from Boral. They're fairly light coloured and have blue/grey flecks on them. We went with the Evergreen Roof tiles as when we saw them at the Boral display centre they looked almost black and went well with the bricks. Our colour consultant was a little bit surprised we chose Evergreen but at Hopetoun they only have a small sample and from that it looks a lighter green colour. What I would like to know is have we made the right decision. I'd hate to put them on the house and at the end they look like Kermit Green. Re: Evergreen Roof Tiles 2May 28, 2009 12:09 am Sounds like a good choice to me I’ve seen and used evergreen tiles my self and have been presently surprised by the quality and colour you defiantly wont be seeing kermit green on your roof. can guarantee you'll like it Locks - Lock Repair and Lock Installation Services Re: Evergreen Roof Tiles 3May 28, 2009 10:48 am We had a green roof on our old house - heritage green, not as dark as the evergreen sounds, anyway I like green roofs but interestingly they dont seem a very popular choice atm, not sure why. Nearly all new houses here are going for black, grey or red roofs, the occasional surf mist - good to hear of some-one doing something different Can you post the colours on here, I know there is some 'loss in translation' with posting colours on computers but it would let us see the look you are going for Re: Evergreen Roof Tiles 4May 28, 2009 1:02 pm diamond09 Sounds like a good choice to me I’ve seen and used evergreen tiles my self and have been presently surprised by the quality and colour you defiantly wont be seeing kermit green on your roof. can guarantee you'll like it Cheers, that's good to hear. Helyn Nearly all new houses here are going for black, grey or red roofs, the occasional surf mist - good to hear of some-one doing something different Yeah, that was my wife's idea. Try something different. I'll try and post a pic when I get home tonight Re: Evergreen Roof Tiles 5May 28, 2009 1:46 pm Moonos I would take whatever diamond09 says with a grain of salt - he is a spammer flogging something from the UK!! Helyn on the other hand is a fountain of wisdom. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Evergreen Roof Tiles 6May 28, 2009 7:07 pm Thanks Kyton for the heads up. Anyway here are some pics Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Here's the missus holding up the tile but we're getting the off white mortar with the bricks Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ As you can see it's a pretty dark colour. The colour consultant recommended we go for a classic cream garage door, guttering downpipes & fascia, and white birch for the windows. I was hoping to go for a grey type window, but she reckons it won't go with the roof tiles. Re: Evergreen Roof Tiles 7May 28, 2009 10:50 pm kyton Helyn on the other hand is a fountain of wisdom. Well, a wanna-be, anyway that tile is not showing much green on my computer, more a grey - is it a greyish green in real life?? I like the bricks, I am a great fan of variated colour bricks like that, ours are similar, Harvest gold, which is a PGH brick. We did the off white mortar too, rather than standard grey mortar. Your bricks look similar to the PGH brick Castille which is really nice too Re: Evergreen Roof Tiles 8May 29, 2009 8:04 pm Helyn kyton Helyn on the other hand is a fountain of wisdom. that tile is not showing much green on my computer, more a grey - is it a greyish green in real life?? Yes it is. Or so my wife tells me as I'm a little colour blind. Re: Evergreen Roof Tiles 9May 30, 2009 7:30 am Tiles are a poor choice for roof as regards future energy costs for aircon because they are heavy (have a high thermal mass). That means that in summer, the sun heats them up, and having a high thermal mass and they absorb a lot of heat energy. Once the sun goes down, the tiles will then re-radiate that heat back into the house. Which means your house doesn't cool down at night as you'd like. So you're either uncomfortable or spend more money on aircon. With a metal roof such as Colorbond, when the sun goes down, the roof is cool immediately. It does need to be insulated on the inside, but everything should be insulated in the roof nowadays. In winter time, bear in mind that yes, there is a little less heat absorption for heating purposes, but given days are shorter, and sun is at a lower angle (hence less direct solar energy absorption) and the days are cloudier, so all up there is a lot less energy to be gained during winter months, than there is extra energy to be spent during summer months on cooling. In short, its better to go for a lighter weight (low thermal mass) roof such as a metal roof over a tile. Just like an esky, you want the thermal mass INSIDE the insulation (ie inside the house envelope, not outside it). While you're at it, go for a white shade on the parts of the roof you can't see, as the reflection of heat will keep you cooler in summer and/or save you further money on future aircon bills Do you have solar on the roof, because if its not a laying defect it looks almost like someone has been walking all over the roof in the mid section of the tile (weakest… 2 1906 2 9419 This certainly doesn't look good.
