Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 26, 2009 1:09 pm Hi Everyone, This is a really great forum, I have found lots of helpful answers here. We have a contour map of our land block that we were given by the developer a couple of months ago. Since then, retaining walls have been put up and the land has been somewhat flattened. Our land just settled last week. We just had an experience with one of the bulk builders who pulled out from constructing our home bcause the slope on the land is too much. Does anyone think it is worthwhile to get an independent site survey done (yes I know it will cost that bit extra as the builder we eventually choose will want to do their own survey anyway), but we just want to know exactly what the contours on the land are and how much slope will cover the building area of the house before approaching more builders and wasting a lot of time, only to be told they can't do the job! Please let me know your thoughts.... Re: Should I get a site survey? Help. 2May 26, 2009 1:16 pm Hi, If you land is not flat or from a land developer, getting a survey done is definitely helpful. I had mine done early because I didn't want to be commited to a builder only to find they charge an arm and a leg for site costs. If would definitely help the builder to better estimate site costs or if they even want to build on the land. It will also shorten your building process as the builder can use your survey instead of them arranging for one and you got to wait an additional 2 weeks. Hope this helps Cheers Jonathan Re: Should I get a site survey? Help. 3May 26, 2009 7:41 pm Hi Jonathan, Many thanks for your response. My husband and I live in Melbourne and are building on the east side. Would you or anyone else have any recommendations of who we could approach to do a site survey? And how much we should budget for this? Many thanks. Re: Should I get a site survey? Help. 4May 28, 2009 11:05 am Yes I think it is a good idea getting your own completed. But be careful. The first builder we were looking at went out and did their soil test and the result came back with: Slab = Class M Site = Class M Which I thought was pretty good considering we have about 1m fall where the house was going to be situated. The second builder we enquired with did their soil test and their results were: Slab = Class M Site = Class P So we were a little confused on how they could come back different Also a pricing on how much it will cost for a site survey is about $320 of course subject to change through different companies. A survey must’ve completed by a certified surveyor.
