You are right, an alfresco is an under roof structure and a pergola is roofless.. There has been a few interesting threads on the subject of alfresco vs patio, which I was following a few months ago. That was when deciding to whether to have an alfresco done by builder or just a slab (for costs reasons) and then a patio roof put in later. We have gone for just the slab and now shopping around for patio covers, we find the whole thing wont be much cheaper than getting the builder to do the alfresco which in my view looks much better...
